Re: New to being a guinea pig mommy

Welcome! He sounds like a cute pig. My main advice is to make sure you are 100% positive he is a boy (a vet can help you if need be) and then to adopt him a same sex friend. Read up on quarantine and introductions first.

They will need at least a 10.5 square foot cage single-level, and bigger is better. Also check out the diet and nutrition charts and sample menus and make sure you are feeding the right veggies, pellets, and hay in the right amounts.

I would also make sure you have a good exotics vet lined up so you don't have to spend time looking for one in case of an emergency.

Good luck with your new guy!

Re: New to being a guinea pig mommy

Welcome! This web site is full of tips so dig right in. There is so much information here but don't be intimidated. I'd say the first things you should read about are cage size and diet. We'd love to see a picture of the little cutey!

Re: New to being a guinea pig mommy

hiya
thank you for the replies
well snuiggles came to us from another home where he wasnt being cared for properly so he pretty much came with everything including instructions and cage etc, he had also already been sexed.
when i get the chance i will try get some pics done - or should i say when he stops running away from me long enough.
he loves his 'daddy' because he feeds him, he lives in the flat next door, but he is still nervous of me for some reason.
i do also have a hamster in the same room. is this ok do you think?
everytime ed walks oin my front door piggy starts squealing his greetings at him - before he even knows who it is!! quite funny really.
xx

Re: New to being a guinea pig mommy

Welcome!! You've definitely come to the right place. This site is just loaded with all the information you need, and more! As akstrohm & TallulahBear have said, be sure to look into diet needs as well as cage requirements. I highly recommend you build Snuggles a C&C cage, you'd be amazed how much their personality comes out when you give them the room to roam (plus its quite a fun and rewarding project). Plus, if you can be warmed up to this idea (as akstrohm has mentioned) guinea pigs are happiest/healthiest in pairs, so look into possibly getting him a buddy? There are endless amounts of cage ideas, toy ideas, ramp ideas, bedding ideas etc etc in the photo galleries, as well as within forum posts. Everyone here is very friendly, and overflowing with piggy knowlegde, so don't be shy to ask questions. Upload a picture of your new piggy if possible, we'd all love to see it
