Hello, my name is Macy. I am a first time Cavy owner living in beautiful Colorado. Early August my ten year old son expressed an interest in getting a guinea pig as a pet. I have ALWAYS been a huge animal lover and the thought of adding and potentially being the primary care giver was OK with me so we went out and purchased.... A book! (I know what you were thinking!) I told my son that we would NOT even consider it until he read the book cover to cover (as did I) and I am really glad we did! I found out so many things I had no idea about! From the cage.... To the Vitamin C.... To the fact they like to be in groups!
Of course once the book was read my son was anxious to get out and purchase a guinea pig, I on the other hand was not. I knew I wanted one but I wanted to make sure we did it 100% right! I found a few different Cavy sites and found out about C&C cages. I knew if we were doing this that they would be the route we went. We did go to a petstore and price them and due to the lovely release of G force they are in high demand right now and they can't keep them on shelves.... Very sad, I do imagine in 6 months or so there will be a lot in animal shelters and in papers, but I suppose we might have to get a new addition at that time. On to our Cavies.
My sons step mother is a huge craigslist fan and called me one day to tell me about someone selling 2 Guinea Pigs with a cage. I knew I didn't want a standard cage so I said no until she pulled up the pictures and they had a two level (I would have prefered one but it is a starter) 2x2 C&C cage... I knew they were meant for us! One week later I checked them and their cage out and decided they were a good match for us and purchased them on the spot.
They are two females but we named them Hurley and Darwin (after G force) which my son saw after we decided, but loved the names. They came from a 10 year old who didn't have the time but so far my 10 year old is making the time. He has happily learned how to clean their cage, change their water and check their food.
Darwin and Hurley have warmed up to us (Darwin more so) Hurley is the rearranger of their home. It is fun learning what they like (greens, green and more greens... Apples, carrots and bananas and don't like... grapes, oranges and strawberries. We are looking forward to our time with them and hopefully many more years of owning these beautiful little creatures! I am very excited to have found this forum and do look forward to sharing some of our adventures in the future!
