Hello from NYC!

Hi everyone! My name's Rina and I'm from NYC. I have been lurking around the forum for a few months and finally decided to make an account.
I am very interested in adopting two piggies very soon. I'm going to go to the shelter sometime this week to check them out.

I'm currently getting ready to buy the grids, chloroplast and all the necessary stuff to make a cage as well as the hay, pellets and etc. I'm very excited!

Re: Hello from NYC!

Welcome! It's great that you're doing research first. In case you have to ask for it, it's spelled/pronounced coroplast. A chloroplast is a plant organelle. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Omg . Hahaha. Thanks for the correction. It would have been embarrassing if I said chloroplast. I think I'm going to have the most trouble trying to find coroplast here... Either that or it's going to be expensive near where I live.

Re: Hello from NYC!

Don't worry, it's a common mistake!

Check out the store locator function on this site. That way you can find out where other members have gotten it cheaply. There are several NYC people here if you get stuck.

Re: Hello from NYC!

I'm in Brooklyn. What borough are you in (if you don't mind me asking)?

I originally bought my cube grids from a retail display store in the garment district for $1.75/grid and coroplast at Canal Plastics on the edge of Chinatown in Manhattan $45 ($30 for the large sheet of coroplast and I was stupid enough to ask them to cut it for me so I could fit onto the subway which was another $15). BTW - word of advice - don't try to get a sheet of coroplast home on the subway during the evening rush hours on a weekend unless you enjoy getting abused and tortured...LOL...that was a BAD idea!

I have since found them cheaper in Brooklyn. I can give you the sources if you want.

Re: Hello from NYC!

Welcome to GPC, you'll love it here! If you live near Connecticut, we have a mostly guinea pig rescue in our state. (It's called Critter Connection in Durham, CT) I'm glad you are considering adoption, have you looked on Craigslist or Petfinder? You may find some guinea pigs that need homes on those sites, in your area.

To find places where you can find coroplast, on the main page of this site you can click on "Find materials" and if you type where you live some people may have written where they got theirs from. Any local sign stores should have coroplast. I called up all of the nearby sign stores and got my coroplast at the cheapest place. ($20) You can find the cubes at stores like Bed, bath and beyond (that's where I got my cube set for $15), Target, Walmart etc.

I live in Flushing, Queens. I ordered 3 grid sets from Bed Bath & Beyond. It was 16 grids per package. I think I ordered too much. Better to have more than less. Too bad it wasn't a white one. I was really hoping for that color. I was thinking of riding the bus and the subway if I can't find any coroplast here LOL. It really sucks not have a car. Do you know the exact size of that large sheet of coroplast? If I can't find any here, I guess I will resort to going to Chinatown.

As for the shelter, I think I am going to call up Sean Casey Animal Rescue and ask if they have any piggies for adoption soon. It's located in Brooklyn too! From what I heard, it takes about 1.5 hours to get there by bus and subway. I think it's worth it.

The sheet of coroplast was 48"x96". Even after we had them cut it to the size needed for a 2x4 C&C cage, it was a total and complete nightmare to get on the subway! It barely fit in the car (the new trains even!), blocked up the doors, and was hard to carry after a while. People gave us looks that could kill and said very rude things - as you can imagine.

Canal Plastics charged us $45. I think it is better to try your neighborhood first before going to crowded, tourist infested Chinatown and trying to take it back to Queens. Especially on the hot crowded 7 train! And then I don't think it would fit on the bus. I was off work one day and was walking to Century 21. I past a regular old sign store two blocks down from our building that I've past a million times and they were open (they're usually closed when I get off work) so I said, well I'll ask them, all they can say is no. I mean, the sign stores use coroplast anyhow to make signs out of right? Lo an behold, they had the coroplast in full sheets with many colors for $20 and all I gotta do is walk it a few blocks home.

I spoke to them about a week and a half ago and they said they had several guinea pigs that needed homes. The adoption fee is $10. Here is their website: Sean Casey Animal Rescue and their Pet Finder page: Sean Casey - Guinea Pigs. I think they are in Kensington.

Nice to meet you...let me know how it goes!

Re: Hello from NYC!

I have worked with Sean Casey before - they are great and they care about the animals they are trying to help. Good Luck. They had a few piggies for adoption ($10 each) when I was there recently.
