Hello,

New here and new to Guinea Pigs. Actually do not own one yet, but working on finishing my cage at this point. My wife and I are looking to add two guineas to go with our two cats. As for myself, I am an animal lover of all kinds and have too many hobbies to list.

guineapigcages.com has really given me some great ideas along with everyone's pictures.

Make sure to read all the sticky forums and pay careful attention to the Nutritional needs of all Guinea pigs and to the care and give the guinea pigs that you plan to get lots of attention and floor time.

I hope the cage that you built has a lid that opens to help keep cats out.

Thanks for the heads up, this site packed full of information. I have ordered up some books from Amazon that the wife and I will study up on before actually getting a Piggy. The cage is pretty much built, coming together and pictured below. As for the cats, I hope the cats will be friendly, but really doubt it knowing them. I do have the cage setup in our 2nd extra bedroom with is hardly ever used and is my makeshift hobby room. The cats are banned from this room already because they love to play on the train set and that is a no-no. I am looking forward to gaining some knowledge on the cav subject and hopefully contribute on this forum.

We are also planning on keeping an eye out at the shelter in our area as we do not like getting pets from pet stores when so many good animals need good homes.

Welcome to GPC!

My husband and I threw away all of our guinea pig books after finding this website (and GuineaLynx). In comparison, the information in the books was not only erroneous, but in some cases, downright dangerous.

Good luck on finding piggies to adopt/rescue. Definately cat-proof your cage(s). I don't mean to be a drag, but I've read too many horror stories about cavies losing their lives because of other pets.

Welcome! I have learned much since being here, and love the community of friends. Like previous posters have said - stickies are our friends! Your cage looks OK, pet-wise, my cat hasn't chew thru the door to get to the room with the piggies (the dog is a whole other tragic tale). I'm glad you are looking to adopt - rescues are chock full all over the country because of unwanted piggies.

Enjoy your new friends when you get them - they are truly a joy and grossly underestimated by the general public (you might hear some comments about "rodents").

I also agree with the other poster about that - books aren't really the best idea. They usually contain outdated information about diet/housing/etc. This site and guinealynx.com should be all you need to have happy and healthy piggies.

Thanks for the replies and advise guys and girls. I made some progress on the cage and put in an order for a pair of "Cozy Cups". Tomorrow I will be meeting a few pigs from a local persona that is over whelmed and hopefully can help them out. Also printed out the great color coated food list located @ this website.
