Smile new to the group

hello my name is stacey i just recently got a new guniea pig. It's been awhile since i have owned one. My last guinea pig was named benny and he lived forever and was the greatest. each time i enter the room he would squeal. That was almost 10 years ago. Now i have new guinea pig. My two daughter love. I have lots of questions. So i will post them here for now till i find the place to put it in the forum. I have to familarize myself with the forum. But the new guinea pig is a girl we named her bunny. the other owner had a four old daughter the previous owner told me she would carry it around and forget about it and stayed in one spot forever. Now we got the guinea she did that for couple days and now she roams the living room . the little girl would carry her in a purse . so my question is was bunny scared of the previous owner and didnt want to move? Because we love on bunny , sometimes i give her food to eat and my girls will just pet her. My next question is I dont think the previous owner feed her carrots only hay so how can i get bunny eat the carrotts and lettuce? For bunny to roam my living does that mean she is happy with us or is she trying to run away? Where can i Post these kind of question.. thank you for help.. thanks stacey

Re: new to the group

Welcome! This thread http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...arts-info.html has lots of information about the veggies in her diet. She needs to have a more balanced and varied diet than just lettuce and carrots. Lettuce and bell pepper are two good veggies to get her to start off eating, then you can gradually introduce others. If she's never had veggies before, don't be surprised if she doesn't eat them much at first. Be consistent and keep offering (removing uneaten food), and pigs tend to catch on and try some after a bit. Hay is the bulk of a pigs diet, so it's good she eats lots of this. She should always have unlimited grass (timothy, orchard grass, etc) hay. In addition to hay and veggies, she should have a small amount (an eighth or quarter cup daily) of pellets. The pellets should be plain, no mixes, and if she's over six months, she should ideally be eating timothy based ones. Oxbow is a good brand available in stores, Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome, and Kleenmama's is a great quality hay and pellet available only online Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home.

It's great that you give her time to roam the living room. http://www.guineapigcages.com/floortime.htm Floortime is important for their health as it gives them a larger space to exercise than their cage. Make sure all wires are unplugged and moved out of reach and things she could get under and behind are blocked off. How big is her cage? Or does she always roam the room?

Good luck with your new pig, it sounds like she is going to have a good home with you and your daughters!
