Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

Greetings! First off, I'd like to say thank you for the wonderful site. I am planning on adopting a cavy for my family, and I am big on researching anything I'm jumping into. This place has been invaluable! I'm planning on building a C&C cage and locating a cavy savvy doctor before adopting for sure. My question is, where to adopt from? From the looks of it, PetCo and PetSmart are not choices for me, so does anyone know a rescue around the St. Louis area? Also, I have found a craigslist ad for one close to me, but how can I be sure that its an ok deal? Here's the link: Guinea pigs need homes too!

A little about me: I'm 27, married with a 2 year old and a 3 year old. We have a dog and a cat. We have been looking at cavy's for around a year now, mostly waiting for our kids to get to an appropriate age. My wife had one as a kid and has wanted another one ever since. Like I said, I'm planning on building a C&C cage before getting one so it will have a nice home to be introduced to.

Thanks for all of the great info!

Johnny

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

It doesn't say what gender the guinea pigs are and says they still live with their parents? You want to make sure they are the same sex and the owner didn't breed the guinea pigs.

1 male and 1 female. So if I decided to get one, I should go for the male, just in case?

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

No, it sounds like they are a breeder. I would find an adoption place or a more valid rehoming ad.

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

That ad sounds very much like a breeder to me as well. If the offspring that are up for "adoption" are still living with their parents, there is a very good chance that the mother and daughter are both pregnant, and may have had multiple litters each already. Cavies can reproduce starting at 3-4 weeks old, and these are 4 months old. Please take a look at the links that pigsforlife gave you. Craigslist does often have legitimate rehoming ads, but you have to learn how to read between the lines.

Critter Coral is in IL The Critter Corral

They may have foster homes near you.

This St. Louis rescue is listing some piggies on petfinder St

You probably want to check your local animal shelters too. Most don't advertise their small animals.

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

These craigs list ads look a little better though the pigs would need a bigger cage:

Guinea Pigs to Good Home
Brother Guinea Pigs-6 Months Old
2 Guinea Pigs need a loving home

2 more
2 Female Guinea Pigs up for adoption

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

Thanks for all the great info. I think I'm going to look into the other craigslist-ings and some of the rescue places. If I was to get two males or two females, what size C&C cage should I be looking to build?

A 2 by 4 C&C. Perhaps with a loft.

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

I had 2 males that I adopted a couple of months back. We built a 2x4 cage for them. They seemed to hide a lot. When we expanded to a 3x4 they really started coming out to see us more and seem to like the extra space. If you have the space, I would recommend at least a 3x4. Good luck with your future adoptions.

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

Gotcha. I am actually going to go check out two females this weekend. The woman who has them now is moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. One is 6 months old (I think) and the other is around a year. She'll give me the cavies, her C&C cage (not as big as I want, but I'll take it to add on to it), accessories, some food, some bedding for $30. Nice little starter kit for my family. Then, I'll just add on to the cage. Thanks for everyone's helpful posts!

Hi Johnny...Welcome to GPC!

Our piggies also come from homes where they are no longer wanted (for whatever reason).

What accessories, food, and bedding are included? You don't want salt licks; "hamster-type" balls; leashes; food with bits and pieces like corn, seeds & nuts; cedar bedding; etc. Those are the kinds of things that most people send along with their unwanted guinea pigs because that's what the pet store told them that they need. We just gracefully accept them, then throw them in the trash when we get home because we know that the person/people "getting rid of" the piggy will not be getting another one and, thus, need any education on the proper care of cavies.

Make sure to read all of the stickies at the top of each forum. You'll be amazed at what you learn about the proper care of guinea pigs!!

Also...don't forget to post pigtures of your new cavy masters so we can yearn to pignap them!!

Re: Hello Hello and Thank You Thank You

I'll post pics asap. The woman will be including a cage, 3 pigloos, 2 waterbottles, a hay rack, a cuddle cup, lots of bedding, 2 kinds of food, hay, and the two piggies of course. Our whole family is excited!
