Welcome to the forums Jessi!
Please consider adopting a companion for Melody. There is a huge over population problem at the moment, and there are thousands of perfectly healthy pigs with no home. There are specific guinea pig rescues all over the world, as well as humane societies and organisations such as the RSPCA which often have pigs in. Online wise, Guinea Pig Home - Home is a good place to start.
What size cage do you currently have for her? What food are you giving her?
Please read the stickies located at the top of each of the forums, they hold alot of information. Also, read through the care guide and other articles on this site Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig

Re: Hello From El Paso,TX

I currently have a store bought cage but oddly enough I have like 10 boxes of the cube things they were on sale at target and we picked up a bunch fr my daughters. As far as food brand not sure the Breeders brought it when they dropped off Melody. I plan to get the Mazuri I use to fee it to my Chinchillas.

Re: Hello From El Paso,TX

Brilliant, so are you planning on making a C&C cage? 2 girls can live quite happily in a 2x3 (thats 2 grids, by 3 grids), or a 7.5sq ft cage the though bigger is always better. Coroplast can be found from any decent sign shop, just look up signs in the yellow pages. You can keep your petstore cage as a transport carrier or a hospital cage (where quarantining, or removing the pig from the others is necessary). Mazuri 5664 is ok, but Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home and Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome are better. How about veggies? Hay? Few things not to give or do - no wheels, balls, or harnesses, no salt licks or mineral licks, no added vitamin c to water.

Re: Hello From El Paso,TX

yes we do plan to make one, Hay yes fresh from the local feed store, vegies yes I save the list that was mentioned on here. Nope none of the extras her cage is pretty bare except she has a food dish,a tube to hide in from my Chinchillas, and a half a hide-a-ball thing that was never used by my chins. Hubby is getting the coroplast for the cage some time this week.

We chose to go with this specific breeder or hobbist because we have no local rescues and the ones at the humane society usually go home with the workers or volunteers I know because Im a volunteer there and before I can even make it to the front to see one it's already been claimed by somebody else.

Re: Hello From El Paso,TX

And while you are reading all the stickies and things, please make the time to read the rules as well. Also just please be aware this site is PRO-rescue and very Anti-breeding.

Welcome to GPC.

Re: Hello From El Paso,TX

Dont give up yet. Have you checked out guineapighome (see the link earlier on)? I take it TX stands for Texas (sorry, I am an Aussie!)? If thats the case, how far away is the Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue - Guinea Pig Home Listings - Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue. Even if it is too far away, it is likely that a piggy train can be organised. The other place to check out is petfinder http://www.petfinder.com/

Re: Hello From El Paso,TX

Howdy from another Texan. I am in Central Texas, near Austin, but I grew up in El Paso, Northeast side.

Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of great information here.

Re: Hello From El Paso,TX

Welcome!

If you have a way to get there.. Texas Rustlers guinea pig rescue, in Dallas, has around 200 piggies for adoption. Its definatly worth the long trip. We drove about 8-9 hrs round trip to adopt Divinci and Donet from them. More, actually because we stayed the night in a hotel nearby.
