Smile Hi! New here

Hi! I just joined. I have never owned a guinea pig before, but I hope to learn about it here. I have started reading books about them, looking them up on websites, stuff like that. So I hope soon, whenever that may be, that I will be able to buy two guinea pigs! If you have any information that could help me, then you can post it here

P.S. I know about C&C cages and I plan to make one once I'm able to get some.

Re: Hi! New here

Glad to see you're finding out all the information you can before getting piggies. I would highly advise adopting your piggies to be. Piggies bought from pet stores are from piggy mills or backyard breeders and most when bought are either sick with uri or other health problems and may be missexed and already pregnant. I would recommend checking to see if you have a local shelter or rescue that has piggies close to you. You could also use craigslist.com or guinealynx.com to find piggies to adopt. Please let us know what other questions you have and we'll be glad to help!

Re: Hi! New here

Hi and welcome!

When we were new to piggies, we also read books and looked on guinea pig websites. Unfortunately, most of the information that we got from those sources was very wrong (in some cases, to the point of being downright dangerous for guinea pigs).

If you read through this website (especially all of the stickies at the top of each forum), print out the diet/nutrition chart in the Nutrition forum, and search the forums for any specific questions/concerns you may have, you will have learned just about all of the basics for the proper/correct care of guinea pigs.

This website is the perfect starting point. If you would need to be referred to another website for additional information...you can rest assured that it would be of the high standards that this site upholds.

Please adopt, or rescue, your pigs (don't buy from a petstore or breeder). There are so many cavies out there that need good homes with folks like you who are willing to learn all about how to take care of them the right way.

Good luck. Keep us posted on your search for your little heart-stealers!!

Re: Hi! New here

Hello and Welcome! I am glad that you are researching before you RESCUE/ADOPT a piggie! Please do not buy from a petstore/breeder!!!

Piggies are a lot of work and even more fun!

*Piggies require a good quality pellet food, such as Oxbow and KM (not your basic petstore brand)!
Petstore brands that have nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and colored bits of stuff that pose a choking hazard, and have very little nutrition.

*Piggies require 24/7 (Unlimited) grass hay, such as timothy, bluegrass, orchard, & brome(to name a few).

*Piggies require at least a cup of veggies every day! Veggies such as romaine lettuce, bell peppers, cilantro, grape/cherry tomatoes, just to name a few!

*Piggies need a water bottle, not a bowl!

*Piggies need floor time to explore and play!

*AND MOST OF ALL: Piggies need your love and attention, and to be spoiled as much as you can spoil!

Good Luck! And ask many questions! We love to answer!

Re: Hi! New here

I do plan to rescue a guinea pig. And from all the information I'm getting here, I think almost all of the books I've been reading are wrong!

If you have learned that already, then you are well on your way to being a GREAT piggie parent!!!! Good Luck!

I read many books before getting my piggies, then I joined this site and wow what a difference! I can't believe how much happier my piggies are now that I have read all of this great information!
