I am thinking seriously of getting my first ever guinea pig. My friend showed me this site and is helping me by giving need to know information. I personally like variety so I need some opinions on location, brand, and other things. Right now though I have a perfect location for a cage I plan to make myself. It's spacious and under a window. The problem though is that it is right next to the heater. And bugs and daft can be a problem even though it hasn't been an issue in a about a year. That is really my concern and I have two cats and I am nervous that my cat, Simba will get hungry when I'm not here. Any suggestions?

Re: Questions from the Newbie If you are worried about your cat getting into the cage you can make a lid for it. I made my lid out of grids and I have 4 grids connected to the cage and 2 that can swing open using zip ties. And when you make your cage use lots of zip ties so the cat can't knock anything down.

Re: Questions from the Newbie You zip tie the grids you want to open together and zip tie one of those to the cage and use a binder clip on the other side to keep it closed. If you browse through the gallery you can find some pictures of this.

Re: Questions from the Newbie Ohhhhh thanks much! Is a location near the heater ok? We only run 3 or 4 months out of the year on medium/low. Also its not a heating vent. It is a wall heater used to um heat the room

Re: Questions from the Newbie I'm not sure about the heater. But as long as it's not too hot I think it would be fine someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Questions from the Newbie How close to the heater would it be? Too much heat can dry out their skin.

Re: Questions from the Newbie So the pig cage would be a foot away to the side? So the heat won't be blowing directly their way? If this is the case, I think they would be fine.

Re: Questions from the Newbie Yes that is the case thanks so much! woo now I have an idea of what I doing! But heat and pigs isn't good right? If heat were to blow that way its a bad idea then

Re: Questions from the Newbie If the heat is only a foot away and blowing at them, that would not be good. It could dry out their skin.

Re: Questions from the Newbie Ok well when I get them I will run a test trial and if they don't like the area or if I notice it's endangering there health I'll move the cage.
