Talking Hi all!

Hello everyone! I am here because there was a little surprise last night that became my unplanned joy! You see, I am currently employed at a local pet store and a gentleman brought in a box of guinea pigs to get rid of. You see, he had decided for some reason that housing a male and female in the same tank would be ok - that is until the female gave birth. He rased the guinea pigs up to near adulthood and then brought them in to us along with mom and pop. We couldn't sell them so we were giving them away for free adoption when I happened to make the mistake of looking at them. I immediatly fell in love with a little female tufted long hair. She's black and white and just a sweetie! I filled out the adoption papers and took her home last night. I named her Rockstar because she has a tall mohawk on her head that made her look like a little punk rocker . Now, I haven't had a guinea pig since I was a little girl and my parents were the ones taking care of it. I did some reasearch and have gotten the basics, but I am here to learn from the pros how to make her life a little slice of heaven. So again, hello all and I hope I can become the best guinea pig parent I can with all of your help and advice!

Re: Hi all!

Welcome to the forum! Please take note and read the stickies located at the top of the each subforum, they hold invaluable information.

Guinea pigs need unlimited grass hay, 1/4 of a cup of pellets per pig per day, and fresh produce twice a day. I recommend Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home or Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome. Guinea pigs can not make their own vitamin c, if you provide a variety of vegetables you wont have to worry about vitamin c. Do not put vitamin c drops in her water.

Guinea pigs need big cages to do pop corns, zoomies and other piggie things. The minimum for 1 guinea pig is 7.5sq ft, 2 guinea pigs need a 10.5sq ft cage as is stated on the main page. Guinea pigs are herd animals by nature and are better when housed in groups of 2 or more. Please consider adopting a cage mate for your guinea pig.

Simple toys like scrunched up newspaper will keep your guinea pig entertained for quite some time. Avoid toys like exercise balls, wheels, harnesses and leashes as they have the potential and will break their back.

Taking her to a professional exotic vet would be a good idea. In the meantime read through this site Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig

Re: Hi all!

Thanks for the help! When I go back to work tomorrow I will see if any of her prior cagemates are left and if so I will go ahead and take one home . Currently she is in a storebought cage but I liked the design ideas on the site so I think I will hit up Target on Friday (payday) and see if I can find any of the little connector thingies. I can't believe how attached she has gotten to me already, though. My fiance wanted to hold her but she threw a fit until she was back in mamma's arms! !

Re: Hi all!

The connectors will come with the grids, although I suggest that you try and get some cable tyres/zip ties as well to help re-inforce everything.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Re: Hi all!

Welcome to the forum!

Make sure to take note of the sticky threads on the top of each subforum they are full of info! I'm also going to give you a few links that might help you out you might have seen them but just to be safe I'll give them anyway. First is a link to a page on links then a link to Kleenmama's hayloft the hay there is absulutely great from what I've heard (I don't have piggies yet but I'm getting some soon). I also heard it is cheaper then Oxbrow (another online hay site). I hope you enjoy the site as much as I am and oh if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them!

PS. Pigtures are a must!
