| Hello all. I'm Robin, I have had guinea pigs for half a year now. I'm live in the Netherlands. My interests are: music, games, philosophy, psychology, politics, my girlfriend, AND OFCOURSE, GUINEA PIGS! ![]() I originally had only 2 girls (Dahlia and sis Felicia) and 1 boy. But then the boy "Rusty" did his trick on my albino girl "Dahlia". Whom carried 4 beautiful kids, 3 girls and 1 boy "Punky" (cause of the hair!). I've been thinking of keeping 1 of the girls "Deirdre" from the nest, but I wasn't happy having to put my little Punky away, so I'm keeping him too. Leaving me with a grand total of 5 cavia's. (Pics coming soon!) Due to lack of extra cages I've putten Rustyman with my Felicia and well he knocked her up now. Due to dissatisfaction of the standard store cages I've been looking all over the dutch websites for bigger one's. Out of sheer desperation I've gone looking for abroad cages, which gotten me with a google search to this Guinea Heaven. Which leads me to now, I decided to sign up, to give kudos to all the brilliant souls that used their love and dedication and made out a great cage-creation. ![]() Thanks to this initiative I can rid myself of those awful cages and give my guinea pigs a prettyful fortress. I will look around the stores to find the C&C materials as shown in all the pictures I've seen around here. When I get my creation around I'll show pics too. Anyways thanks for your time and see you around. -Robin Last edited by Susan9608 : 10-22-07 at 04:57 pm. |

| Re: Love being here already! Hi and Welcome. From reading your post, it sounds like you are purposely breeding your pigs. I do want you to understand that this is and ANTI-breeding forum. I hope you learn why we feel this way. A good start would be to read our philosophies forum. |

![]() I don't see any direct moral problems with a guinea pigs mating with a non-relative to be honest, but I'll read along and learn. The first litter was an incident, btw, I was doing nightshift and me father was just a tad late on stopping Rusty. With all good intentions though, I do take care of my little piggies. I didn't expect the litter to be 4. It's just 2 too much for my current capacity. The next, and last, litter will be from Felicia and by the time this one comes I hope I'll have my C&C cage up. In the meanwhile Rusty's up for castration, and Punky too when he gets old enough. Then we can mix them in with the rest of the girls without having to worry about "breeding". |

| Re: Love being here already! Of course it wasnt a warm welcome. This forum does not support breeding of any kind unless it betters the species. Are the boars separated from the sows? How old is your pregnant one? |

I'm thinking of editing my topics title already... ![]() Rusty is now with his pregnant darling Felicia, but will be seperated when Felicia gives birth (t -8w). Will be neutered end of this week/beginning next week. Punky will be seperated tomorrow, while the 2 girls will go to a new house. Deirde will stay with her mother. Dahlia was ¾ of a year, Felicia going 1. I suspect it not to be better for the species as a whole, as they will remain here until the afterlife. But I believe it's best for my pigfamily as they'll be seen to properly. |

| Re: Love being here already! Has Felicia had a litter before? If she hasnt she will need a c-section. Her pelvic bones have fused, and the babies will not be able to get out without a c-section. If she does not have a c-section she and the babies will die, her chances even with a c-section are slim. |

This is her first. She's pregnant for about a week now. Now I feel ignorant, as I am not even sure of her age. Somewhen round the age of Dahlia, round ½-1 year max. ![]() I took Felicia and Dahlia from a petstore, without a certificate so I guess they might be breeding spawns. Rusty I got from my auntie who had saved him from some ****er at the market. Rusty and Dahlia had 4 fine kids like I said, which was around 4 weeks ago. What is this C-section you're on about? |

| Re: Love being here already! At a certain age (10 months I believe) a sows pelvic bones fuse unless the sow has had a litter beforehand. So if your sow has not had a litter before, and she is 1 year old her pelvic bones have fused and the babies will not be able to get out. Therefore, she needs a c-section where a professional exotic vet will open her up and take the babies out. The risk that the babies and the mother will die is high, but without it she will die. Dont you love ignorant backyard breeders? |

| Re: Love being here already! Don't you just love labelling people with the best intentions? Could've been an ass and ignore your post, instead I choose to listen. Don't be such an elitist pig, I'm only keeping in mind what I've been learned. Quote:
![]() I'm luck I got here and that you people can educate me since you obviously know more then the people that should know those things... ![]() Recounting the time I've had them, since May (then aged round 1-2months), I think we've got nothing to worry about with the c-section. |

| Re: Love being here already! Uh, yea, This is a site that is against breeding under any means. Ok, IT seems like you love your piggies but if you cared enough about your piggies you would have got the males spayed before you mixed them because you should have known they most likely would have "Done their stuff" as I'll put it, Just be smart and don't PURPOSLY breed, not saying you were, but yo might want to watch out on this site. P.S. Welcome |

That's not what I'm doing. I'm not into any contests, and I don't even want to sell my baby piglets. I just let mine have babies. With the good intention of giving them more family company. Is that so evil, that you people think that you have the right to call me some backyard breeder imploring that I lock mine in little cages and just let them hump eachother to sell the kids or get the most prettiest show-pig? Quote:
I do however let them together on the couch with my family under supervision to intervene any horny actions by Rusty. Dahlia however one time was at her productive highpoint and Rusty took advantage of that, and my parents couldn't get him off on time. Rusty will be neutered within a weeks time now. Punky (little boy) will be seperated in a few minutes as I'm gonna get him a new cage for the time being and keep him like that till he can be neutered. I did put Rusty in with Felicia as Dahlia and her kids needed a rest and Felicia couldn't be anywhere near Dahlia and the kids (she gets fierce). So yeh, I did purposely let one get knocked up, but I'm intending to keep the biggest part of the litter as I'll be making them a huge C&C cage. I don't consider this the evil breeding you guys are on about but maybe I'm not ethically "right" in your eyes either way, as you guys are already getting at me.. ![]() |

| Re: Love being here already! Well.... whats done has been done so I'm gonna give you some info. Cavies under six months should have alfalfa hay which has extra calcium in it which will help with making their bones nice and strong. Once the babies are over six months you should mix the timothy hay in with some alafa hay a few times a week. Oh and here's some more info on pregnant pigs and babies, -try not to handle her that much -Pregnant and nursing sows actually benefit from alfalfa hay mixed in with grass hay - Add some calcium enriched veggies like parsley and spinach. Here's a great calcium chart. Guinea Lynx :: Calcium Chart - Separate any males in the litter at three weeks because at that age they can't get their mother and sisters pregnant. Here's a great page on sexing http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm -Make sure to baby proof your cage add at least four inches of coroplast. Ten inches is a good height for it to be at and make sure they can't squeeze through the grids. Here are some pictures of some baby proofed cages http://www.guineapigcages.com/photos...ry.php/cat/532. - Keep critical care on hand in case of an emergency. - Here are some other extra links Guinea Lynx :: Reproduction Guinea Lynx :: Vegetable and Fruit Charts this one may help anyway. Sorry if I kind of bashed you but correct me if I'm wrong but you are going to keep most of the babies? They can have up to 8 babies do you have that much room and money? Food and bedding are not the only thing you must pay for what if one or two had to go to the vet? That would be pretty expensive. If Rusty is in te cage with the other female too seh is probably pregnant too or was she already? |
