Me and Butterbutt Hi, my name is Debbie and I just got my very first Guinea pig. Actually my boyfriend bought her for me as an early birthday present about 10 days ago and already I'm completely in love He got her from the local pet store, we live in a tiny little town (Main street is 2 blocks long) and the pet store is a mom&pop type place. She's a gold and white American short hair (as best as we can tell) and between 4 and 6 months. I've since been looking for a rescue to adopt but there's nothing anywhere close to where I live, and I don't have a car. We're going this afternoon to look at a new "shipment" at the pet store, (only because poor little Butterbutt is so lonely) and I really don't think I should, knowing me I'll end up bringing home 10 more They've got a fat 1 year old male crested I "named" Romeo, the first time I ever went in the shop he darted out of his hole and whisteled at me, I want to bring him home so bad but we live in a small place and really don't have room for another enclosure. We fixed up a big pen in the middle of the livingroom floor, it's a plexieglass circle with more floor space than a play pen and she's got hideing boxes and towel tunnels and food and water. Newspaper flooring covered with a towel so there's nothing to hurt her poor little footsies. I already know she loves carrots, apple, romaine lettus, grapes, and kiwi. She doesn't like cucumber, oranges or celery. We're still iffy about bell peppers Yesterday I got my first popcorning! I had no idea hay was SO important so after days of her not having any I bought some and she was doing her happy piggy dance all through it and spent a solid hour just munching. I'll never be without hay again! Anyway, that's my Butterbutt, as soon as I can get some pigtures I'll post them.

Re: Me and Butterbutt Hi Debbie and welcome to the forum! There are alot of knowledgeable people who are always willing to help, so feel free to ask questions as you please. I have 3 girls, soon to be 4 (I am looking into adopting another little pigger!) named Buttercup, Lily and Toffee and aged about 6 months, 6 1/2 months and 3 1/2 months. The three main, and very informative sites include this site, this site Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig and this site Index of / If you have not already, I highly recommend that you have a look through them. Not sure where you live, but if possible please adopt. I know of cavy adoption centres who will fly interstate or who will drive half way and meet at a designated spot. If there is a will there is a way. Anyway, once again, welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy it! Everyone here, including me, are pigture-o-holics so pigtures are a must!

Re: Me and Butterbutt I would LOVE to adopt! I've call the vet in the area and left my number, in case someone drops off an "unwanted" piggy (I can't imagine anyone not wanting one of these gentle, friendly, lovable little babies) and I've called the humane society and they've told me they may get a Guinea pig once every 3 years or so. I live in Sidney New York, so if anyone is in the area (Binghamton, Oneonta, Corning ect ect) and knows of a piggy needing a good and loving home, and would be willing to make the drive, feel free to message me here. A little more about me; I'm 37 (38 on Monday) years old No children I love animals more than most (almost all) people I'm at home almost 24/7 because of a back injury (it doesn't stop me from cleaning my pig pen and playing with my Butterbutt) If I only had enough food for me OR Butterbutt...well, I can stand to lose a few pounds LOL! My little critters get taken care of no matter what! I have no other animals, but I do feed the wild critters outside, I have 4 chipmunks that took me ages of patience to get them to come when I call and eat sunflower seeds from my hand. 5 racoons come right up and take bread from my hand, 3 skunks that are no longer skittish when I go outside and toss corncobs to them and a fat, waddling woodchuck that loves celery. Oh yeah, I can't forget the squirrels...lots of squirrels LOL I'm still forgetting something...OH YEAH! My boyfriend LMAO! I shold have put him first because he's a big softie when it comes to animals (except cats), he likes to pretend he's not, but he fell in love when he saw Butterbutt and stayed up 'till 3am making her piggypen, and he sits in his chair with a goofy smile on his face listening to her little weeks and chitters and watching her run in and out of her hidy boxes.

Re: Me and Butterbutt Hi and Welcome You have wild critters you feed too I used to feed some stray cats that wandered around and we eventually got some other critters lets see a possom, racoon and skunk. The skunk sprayed my dog twice in two weeks . Oh and that dounds like typical men and It's cute because my dad always called my pigs rodents but when they died he cried.

Re: Me and Butterbutt Welcome to the forum. I just wanted to give a bit of advice about feeding fruits. Fruits are very high in sugars and it's best to limit them to very small amounts only a couple times per week. If you haven't seen the sticky threads at the top of the Diet and Nutrition forum, please check them out as they have some invaluable advice.

. That's the same with me. I started feeding stray cats, I leave a two big bowls of food and water out. Now three possoms and three skunks come. Sometimes I see a possom eating with a cat. I love watching them. |

Re: Me and Butterbutt Thank you for the welcomes and advice. The lady who helps run the pet shop knows of a couple of "need good homes" piggies, she's got my number and is going to call me. I never suspected I would fall so much in love with a Guinea pig.
