Hi everyone,
I just joined this site today. I'm a 38 year old married homeschooling mom to my daughter who is 7. We have two guinea pigs, Jewel (tri-color) and Jasmine (a black teddy). My daughter saved up her own money for months to buy them and their setup back in April. They are her first real pet beyond a fish. She takes care of them all by herself for the most part (I do the cage cleaning because I'm picky about how it's done) but she gets up everyday and checks their food and water, fixes up their messes, etc. I'm very proud of her. She is so in love with them. We have other pets and always have, but they are primarily mine or the family in general. We also have a dog, cat, two parakeets and a betta fish.
Although the guinea pigs are hers I am finding that I enjoy them quite a bit myself. I wasn't sure about them at first because I'm used to pet rats and have had many over the years. Their characters are so vastly different (love rats' puppy-like way) but the piggies have won me over with their silly little ways and endearing sounds. They are a more subtle creature and I have come to appreciate that about them. We are even thinking of adding a third possibly if the right situation comes along.
I found the site awhile back and was inspired by the C&C cages. We finally made one this weekend (2x4, single level, with a lid since we have a cat) although it's not quite finished yet. We realized we need a few more items to tweak its construction and I need to buy some cheap towels or something to help line it, we plan to use fleece which is another inspiration from this site! We are making it a Hawaiian theme. I'll post a picture after it's done.
For playtime we use a plastic kiddie wading pool and that seems to work quite well. I keep it under my bed. LOL It's light and portable though so we use it all over the house. They run around in it and if we have them out in our laps or something it's a convenient place to put them if we have to get up and do something else for a minute. We just have to put the cat in the laundry room during that time. Our dog is real good around the pigs though and they don't bother her.
Well, I have babbled on long enough.
