Re: New To Piggies

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I moved this to the appropriate forum section. There is a sticky thread at the top of this forum called "newbies, please read this post first" that is very helpful and contains links to many areas of care.

Re: New To Piggies

Welcome. Have you looked over Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig for care info?

She's a cutie. What are you feeding her?

It looks like she has a pellet mix in her dish? She should actually have plain high quality pellet - no colored bits and seeds.

Re: New To Piggies

Is your vet an exotic pet specialist? Young pigs would do well on Cavy Performance by Oxbow-it has alfalfa in it. She really shoudn't be on the current food you have her on-even the best intentioned vets can adivse wrongly if they aren't a specialist in small animals. She is very cute-have you thought about getting her a buddy?

Re: New To Piggies

actually yes, my vet is an exotic specialist. I take my ferrets to him for all their checkups, etc. I have a regular vet for my dog and a specialist for my ferrets so I called up the specialist about Peppers food needs

Re: New To Piggies

It's made by Hartz, which is the worst. That's the problem. She should be getting all the nutrients she needs with a balanced diet of HIGH QUALITY plain pellets, unlimited grass hay (with alfalfa if she is younger) and a cup of fresh veggies a day.

Re: New To Piggies

He or she is really directing you incorrectly. Perhaps he is more experianced with ferrets then with guinea pigs. That is not a good food-regardless of the age and I would hate to see someone buy it thinking that it is.

Re: New To Piggies

The problem with many pellets is they use a lot of fillers, cheap quality ingredients and dangerous ingredients. Pellet mixes only make for obese pigs and pose a high risk for choking.

Even many exotics vets aren't up to date on proper nutrition. Have you checked out or diet and nutrition forum? Also guinealynx has a great diet section.
