Welcome! Yes, that's big enough but when you start hearing and seeing the great ideas here, you'll probably get the building bug. How smart of you to find this site before you get your piggies. I wish I had. That probably means you already know that rescuing is better than buying from pet stores. Do you know yet where you are getting your piggies from? Do you wan tboys or girls?

Re: Hey! =) I'm new!

There's always a minimal adoption fee to ensure that the guinea pigs are going to a loving home that can afford them and are committed. Free pets usually end up abused or neglected. Small animals like guinea pigs usually end up as snake food this way.

If you can't afford a $50 adoption fee for a pair of healthy pigs, then you should re think it since vet bills can run in the hundreds. A rescue usually operates on donations alone, so they can continue rescuing guinea pigs.

Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten.
PetHarbor.Com National Animal Search Engine
Guinea Pig Home - Home

Pet stores are only out for a buck, and you are supporting pet mills and backyard breeders when you buy from them. You'll also likely end up with sick and pregnant guinea pigs. Treating them for mites, lice and URI will run you much more than an adoption fee.

Check your local animal shelters/ SPCAs. Many don't advertise their small animals.

Re: Hey! =) I'm new!

Also, a shelter's adoption fee could be a lot cheaper than the price a petstore wants you to pay. Especially if one or both of the girls is pregnant and/or has mites.
Have you checked Craigslist.com and Petfinder.com for piggies near you?
Good luck!

Re: Hey! =) I'm new!

Here http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...r-threads.html

I suggest you don't get any pets at all until you're older and can get a job or something since it sounds like any pigs you get won't get any vet care at all.

They will get vet care if it's that serious you know,my mom is just sick right now and she doesn't like to deal with stuff right now! My mom is an absolute pet lover,it's not like if my guinea pigs were sick or had mites she would just watch them!! I have to go!!

How much more evidence do you need? That's all pretty darned serious right there. Check out the thread in the sticky part of Introduction for Newbies. There are lots of stories that will explain how horrible breeding is. I have to agree with what has already been said, if you can't adopt pigs, just don't get them. If you had already purchased them before coming here and didn't know how serious the problems with overpopulation in shelters and rescues are and the horrors of breeding and pet mills, that would be one thing. A lot of us bought pigs before we knew better, but you know the difference.

Re: Hey! =) I'm new!

GPsRock has emailed me so I know the problem is not convincing GPs, but convincing the Mom who likes the idea of a guarantee from a certain pet store. This young & potentially Very resposible future owner wants very much to adopt. The Mom likes the sound of a "reputable store" and a "guarantee". RememberGPs Rock, do your homework here on this subject. Get pictures & quotes, be respectful and calm. Read some more threads and make notes. Print out some posts & pictures for your Mom and let her know how much it means, but calmly. Good Luck!

Re: Hey! =) I'm new!

No, I didn't. I even gave you suggestions about where to adopt.

If you have to rely on a parent that would rather go with convenience and 'exchange' a sick guinea pig like it's a defective toy (by YOUR own words), then it doesn't like a good situation.

You're here doing research, which is good but too many kids have come on here saying their parent won't let them take their sick pig to a vet.

Re: Hey! =) I'm new!

I knew you could do it GPs Rock! Tell us about your new piggies. RNCluv wasn't trying to attack you personally. You will see a lot of posts from kids and adults who really do treat pets a s disposable. It's not easy being a Teen and having to prove your maturity and level of responsibility. When you get steamed, try to walk away & do something else until you are calmer. It's great advice, I wish I would follow it more!

It's not always easy being an adult either!

Re: Hey! =) I'm new!

I am so glad that everything is working out with your mom. When are you getting the piggies? You do realize that posting lots of pictures of your new piggies is a must right?? I went into a petstore over the weekend and saw that they got in new piggies. There were about a dozen of them. I tried to pick one up but they were so skittish that it made it tough. The sales guy came over and started pushing me to buy one. I asked him how old they were and he didn't know. I asked if they were male or female and he said both, they are mixed in. I immediately put the pig back in the pen. The guy said to me which one I wanted and I said neither one of them because all the females are probably pregnant by their brothers. The guy said to me that they are too young to get pregnant. I told him that males can get the girls pregnant as young as 3 weeks of age. The guy stood their and said oh, I didn't know that. I said to him, obviously and you want me to purchased an animals from you that you have no idea how to care for them....I think not. A lady and her daughter did purchase one and I over heard the same guy trying to sell her yogurt drops. I jumped in and told them that piggies are lactose intolerant and that the yogurt drops will make them sick. she didn't get the yogurt drops or all the treats she was told to get. She put back the crap food and bought the Oxbow performance and a huge bage of hay. I hate petstore sales people, most don't have a clue about the animals they sell.
