I have just adopted a guinea pig. I am a vet assistant at a local clinic here in Franklin, In. and have taken in a sweet little girl with a huge abcess in her neck. She was brought to us by a pet store that could not sell her because of the abcess and she was going to be euthanized. She will require several procedures to correct this problem so for now she remains at the clinic. After she is well I will be taking her home. I have never had a guinea pig as a pet and I will need a lot of advice regarding her care and maintenance. I have been reading quite a bit about guinea pigs on the net and I understand that they do better if they live in groups of 2 or 3. Should I purchase another female to accompany her? She will have plenty of 1 on 1 time with me but will that be enough? Would she be happier with a sister or two? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to provide her with the best life I can give her, no matter what it takes.....

Re: Hello I am a newbie! Ohhh welcome. Definitely adopt her a piggie friend. She will love it, but I would wait till she is in good health, since piggies can fight a little at first, and you wouldn't want anything to happen to her abcess. Of course you could adopt a piggie and put her/him in quarantine till she's well. Please look at the nutrition links on this website, they are great and good nutrition should help her get back on her feet in no time. Good luck.

Re: Hello I am a newbie! Thanks for giving her a home. It's so much fun to set up a new piggy kingdom and this is the place to find out everything you need to know. Considering your job, you will find Guinea Lynx web site very interesting too. Please read up on rescuing so you can ADOPT a friend when you're ready.
