Hello all!

Hi everyone. I'm new to the cavy world and came to the site to research before deciding if I want to invest my affection in one of the fuzzballs. So far from what I've read, it makes me want one even more. My wife and I had a hampster for about 2 1/2 years until he died, so we're not completely new to small animals.

I'm trying to find a cavy adoption center nearest to where we live, Baton Rouge, LA, but the cloest one is about an hour and a half away (not too big of a problem though, but I was hoping where would be one closer). We have a nice large spot designated for a cavy home, about 6 feet long and can be 2-3 feet wide. It's in our office, which is where I spend most of my time when I'm home.

I want to get two cavies, maybe three if we can handle it, either a silky and a short haired, or 2 short haired. I'm trying to find anywhere locally that sells C&C Cages, but even after shipping, purchasing on this site is still cheaper than buying a petstore cage (plus loads more roaming room ).

Any tips will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

~Pat & Stacy.

Re: Hello all!

Hi Pat & Stacy, welcome! That's great that your adopting piggies! You can usually get the cubes for the cage at walmart or target, and most sign stores will sell the coroplast. I would suggest looking at the nutrition charts:

This site is really great, all the info you can ever need!

Re: Hello all!

I was surprised at how easy it was to find cage materials. The grids, like heather said, can be found at Walmart, but also at large grocery stores, home decorating stores, building supply stores and office supply stores like Staples. I got my coroplast at an art supply store.
Welcome to the forum!

Re: Hello all!

Thanks for the welcoming. We're planning on getting the cavies in about 2 or 3 months. We just moved into the house and we need to get all of our furniture first. But I think we're both set on what we want now.

I'll start combing the entire site and forums for information now. Mostly all the little things you don't think about until it happens.

Thanks.

Welcome the the forums. That's great that your going to be adopting. And research is always a good thing to do before adopting. Can't wait to see pictures when you have the chance to adopt.

Re: Hello all!

Welcome to the forums and awesome that you are researching ahead of time!
Just a suggestion, but call the shelter that is 1 1/2 hours away. A lot of times they can refer you to closer pigs, they may have fosters set up that are closer to you, or they may be willing to transport all or half way.

Re: Hello all!

Hello and welcome. Your so lucky to have found this site now - you'ff be so much better off learning about piggies before you get them, especially as you know not to waste lots of money on a pet store cage.

I'm sure by the time you get your piggies you'll be really knowledgable and they'll be happy piggies!

Congrats on wanting to adopt!
