New Owner and Loving It!!

Hello! I am a first time Guinea Pig owner, and I absolutly love it. His name is Sterling, due to his beautiful silver and white coat. He has a black head and black back feet, a little smudge of brown and white on the top of his head. I believe also that he is an American Guinea Pig. I was delivering some paperwork to the local Humane Society here in SW Florida, and while I was there I took a look around. Way in the back in a poor cage sat a single Guinea Pig, the most beautiful I've ever seen! I was looking at getting Gerbils for my daughters, but I decided that "he" was the one. And boy was I right! Sterling has the most precious and pure personality, and just loves to be held cuddled and played with. He's still very small, so I would guess he is around 1-3 months of age, maybe a little older. I can't wait to watch him grow and learn. I HAD him housed at first in a 10 gallon tank, and quickly came to the conclusion he coudn't spend another moment in there. So I went out and bought a Superpet "My First Home" cage, 30"L 18"W 16"H.
It seems very suitable for him, and hopefully will be for a time to come. As he grows larger, I'm looking at and taking notes into building my own larger cage for him, but not to much more than I've got now. I can't wait to meet you all and your babies. Much Love and Holiday Warmth to you all!

Re: New Owner and Loving It!!

Welcome to the group and glad to hear that you have adopted a new family member. He sounds like a really cutie. You will find a lot of helpful information that will help you and your piggy be happy and healthy.

It is good to see that you got him out of the aquarium that you had him and into something bigger but you are going to find that is going to be to small for him to even live in. GPs require at minimum 7.5 sq ft per pig and the no pet store cage will ever come close to those requirements. The amount of money that you spent on that new cage you could have built one large for less or even the same amount of money and it would have met the housing requirements. This especially holds true if you are ever planning on getting him a piggy friend since they are social and like to live in groups.

Good luck to you and welcome.
