New Member Questions

Hi my name is Pam , and I was given a cavy because the owner was alergic to him..He came in a cage but I decided to take his playpen he came with and make him a pen instead..Because I read some stuff here on theur cages and bigger is better...I put his pen on the floor lined it with newspaper and put a towel on top of that..Plus his dome and I added a litter box..I dont know if he will know what to do with that litter box ? and Im not sure this home arraigment will work for him? He for sure has more room and he is on the kitchen floor in a corner...I figure this way I can watch him better and clean his area daily..Can I get some input on this? Thanks! I have no ideal what I am doing..LOL I live in west lancaster in southern Calif..Will he get cold in the arraigment I put his home in? I hope these are not dumb questions..But this pen looks alot roomier then that cage..Just hope it works..My new cavys name is Rusty and he is a calico

Re: New Member Questions

Any set up is better than the little pet store cage he had! You might want to use an old shower curtain liner under his newspaper to protect your floor. The urine will quickly soak through the paper and make a stinky mess. I would suggest you cover your towels with a layer of fleece. (an old fleece blanket or you can buy fleece at a fabric store). This will help wick moisture away from the top layer to the towels below and keep your piggie on a dry surface.

As for the litter box, try putting his pellet bowl or hay rack in it. Piggies tend to do their business where they eat so this will help keep the worst of the urine in one spot. I do this with my two boars and it works pretty good.

Your pig will enjoy being in the kitchen as they love the attention and here you will be able to talk and interact with him lots! Make sure he always has unlimited hay and daily fresh veggies to keep him healthy.

good luck!

Re: New Member Questions

I will get some fleece tomorrow! Thanks for the fast response! I would think it would be hard to clean the pen with a shower curtain underneath wouldn't that make worse of a mess? Any suggestions on how to better keep this area clean?
