Sorta new ... In mid Nov my husband bought me a guinea pig from a store as a surprise gift (he meant well but obviously he is uneducated when it comes to pets). I immediately jumped on the internet to do some research as I knew nothing about cavies.
I landed on this site and within a couple of days I had built a 2 by 4 C&C cage, thrown out the vitamin C drops for the water, trashed the mineral treat , poor quality pellets and the salt lick, added veggies and started looking for a buddy for Pig Newton.
I located 3 male babies at the SPCA (mother was sold pregnant from a pet shop) and adopted Bean. He went into quarantine.
Meantime, I discovered that Newton had mites so it was off to the horse supply for Ivermectin and treatment began for both the pigs.
So, now a few weeks later, the pigs have been introduced and seem to enjoy each other. We saw their first popcorns a few days ago, Newton sleeps out in the open and lets us reach in and pet him. Bean is a little more shy but both of them enjoy their nightly lap cuddles and snack time. I converted the original pet store cage into a second story kitchen and hay loft. Bean wheeks whenever the fridge is opened which never fails to make us laugh.
I never knew what great pets pigs make and we are already attached to them. They are the most fascinating little guys.
Many thanks to this site and members for all their help in educating me and making my boys happy and healthy. We love them so much and are hoping to have many healthy years with them. |
