| Hi I'm New Hi I'm new here and just want to say hello. I don't yet have my guienea pigs, as I haven't yet made their cage. I just got approval from my landlord on Friday. I went out then and bought a bunch of stuff, books, cage etc...etc... but not yet the pigs. Glad too. I then found this site and thought man that cage is small, also I want to get 2 of them so they'll have each other (same sex of course). I've already tracked down the cloroplast (4' x 8') and will pick that up today after work. I've checked with several places that sell cubes and will look at them and decide what I like best. Fastsigns (where I'll be getting the cloroplast) offered me a discount if I take picctures of the guinea pigs and habitat when I'm done. The manager told me that I'm about the 3rd person who asked for cloroplast to build a guinea pig cage and that has sparked his curiosity. He also asked if there was some sort of web site showing them and I of course referred him to here. For now I'm building a single story 2 x 4 grid. I will add a second story on to it later. I do have a question or 2....what is the healthiest bedding (all natural preferred) and does anyone know of any 100% natural guinea pig foods. I only eat organic and natural things myself and plan to feed them the same way. And so far other than the hay, everything I've seen at the pet store had chemicals and dyes in them etc... I haven't been grocery shopping since Friday yet, and so I haven't seen if my Co-Op has any guinea pig food in their pet section. Well, I'm done with my little ramble here. Last edited by Susan9608 : 07-24-06 at 12:27 pm. | Re: Hi I'm New Welcome! You'll fit in great here. That's so funny about the coroplast, these cages are really catching on. Where are you getting your piggies from? As for the food, try Oxbow. They have no artificial colorings, etc, and are the healthiest pellets you can get. Their website is Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome you can order off the site, or they have a store locator to see if there's a shop near you that sells it. |

Re: Hi I'm New Thanks for the info on the Oxbow food. There is a store less than 2 miles away that carries it. (Less than 2 blocks away from my art studio in fact It is important to me to feed them natural foods as well as to clean with natural products. I try to keep my home and body chemical free and will do the same for the piggies.

Re: Hi I'm New Glad to have you aboard - sounds like you'll fit right in here. Do us a favor, though, and post in black, using colors for emphasis only. Some people have a hard time reading the different colors and such, and I'd hate for someone to miss out on a post from an obviously kindred spirit. Thanks!

And yes I think I'll fit in right here. From what I can see you all just as big of animal lovers as I am and seem to want the best for them. That is something I can definitely fit in and get along with. I am glad I found this site. Hopefully I'll avoid mistakes. I'm already returning the wheel and vitamin drops (that you supposedly need) because of what I've read on this site. I'll let the store know why I'm returning both--not that it'll probably do much good. But a voice is a voice, unless you don't use it (something I'm rarely guilty of). |

Re: Hi I'm New Welcome to Guineapigcages/CavyCages You may want to return the books if you can too. They often have too much misinformation and recommend things that can be potentially dangerous to pigs. I think the healthiest pellet comes from Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home. She just formulated these pellets a few months ago with only the best of ingredients in mind for guinea pigs. She also sells the most incredible hay imaginable. In case you don't know yet, piggies will require one cup of fresh veggies daily. Here is a great post to help you get started on what and how often to feed. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/130479-post3.html

Re: Hi I'm New You guys are the absolute best here!!!!! Question on peppers....in the book that I bought it mentions that you need to peel the skin off of them because it is hard for the piggies to chew. Is this true or is that misinformation (this thread that you posted doesn't seem to say that.

Re: Hi I'm New No you don't need to peel the skins off. Cavies can eat skins and rinds just fine.

Re: Hi I'm New I remove the seeds from the bell peppers personally because I've found that they stick to things, and I don't want to risk my piggies choking. I'm pretty sure they're not poisonous or anything. Someone please correct me if you know about the seeds in bell peppers. In chilis, they are the hottest part, but that shouldn't be a factor in a bell pepper.

Re: Hi I'm New I know a few people who leave the seeds in peppers when feeding but there is always that "risk" of choking. I always take them out as I have a couple pigs wo do tend to eat too fast and choke. The pepper seeds aren't soft like those in cucumber or tomato.

Re: Hi I'm New Well I picked up the coroplast today. It is big and I had to walk like 15 city blocks with it here in Seattle. People were really looking at me funny and some people just laughed.
