German Girl in Tennessee

Hi guys,

I came to the US about two years ago to get married to my wonderfil husband. Please note that I am from Germany and I will try my very best to write correct English.

I had a guinea pig before when I was younger, but we had to put it down, because it had an abcess from overgrown teeth. We brought it to the doctor, got it cut open, flushed it several times daily, force fed him fluids and food, but the little guy didn't make it. By the time we recognized the abcess, which grew toward the inside (!) of the pig, so from outside you couldn't see anything, it had already eaten its way into the bone. That was a very sad day for me.

I recently decided to get another piggy. His name is "Beaver" , because he looks like one. I got him from the petstore and since he didn't get any hay there, I already had to deal with an abcess again. But thank God he is healthy again.

Beaver just moved from a petstore cage to a C&C cage with 2x3 bottom and 2x2 top . He is really enjoying his new home and is hoping that I will find him a piggy friend soon. This time I am going to adopt, not only to help a homeless piggy, but also because they probably get treated better/with more knowledge in a shelter/rescue than in a petstore.

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad your going to adopt Beaver (I love that name) a friend. Adoption is good for many reasons: you save a homeless pig, you have less chance of getting a sick pig, less chance of missexed pigs, and you don't support the breeders that are causing the overpopulation problem.

Don't worry about your English, it looks great to me!

Thank you PiggieMom.

I've tried yesterday and called around at many many local shelters, but nobody had a single guinea pig.

The clostest piggies that I have found on petfinder.com are between 160 and 200miles away. Quite far if you don't know how exactly they look like or how healthy they look in person or if they will get along with my pigger or not. I guess I just have to continue looking.

Tiffi---Hi and welcome to the forum

If you are looking for a really great guinea pig rescue I highly recommend Knoxville Guinea Pig Rescue. The lady that runs the rescue's name is Janet and if you tell her all about Beaver (his age, personality etc) she will try to match you up with a great friend for him.

She is a little bit of a drive for you, but it is very easy to find, right off of the highway. I drove to her house twice to rescue some pigs and I live all the way in Alabama. If you are worried about what they look like I am sure she can send you more pictures of the ones you are interested in. She has some pigs listed on Petfinder Reception Desk, and many times has some that are not listed.

Good luck finding Beaver a friend and I am so happy you decided to build a CC cage. I bet he is just loving it!!!

Welcome! Your English is perfect, I have no problem understading you. Also, if you have no luck finding a rescue nearby, you can always pick one out that's a little farther away and organize a piggy train, where people on the forum get together and help transport your piggy to you. Good luck!

Re: German Girl in Tennessee

Hi! And welcome to the forum. I'm glad you are going to adopt him a buddy. That's why we highly encourage adopting instead of buying because you just never know what kind of condition your piggie will be in and the poor mom that has to go through labor over and over again. How sad.

But we're glad to see that you've found this place and realize that. Welcome again.

Re: German Girl in Tennessee

I am very happy to have met such nice and helpful people here! Really, you guys are great! Also thank you for the information about the Knoxville guinea ig rescue. I've seen it on petfinder.com before, but wasn't sure if it would be worth the drive. I will definitely write this lady now though.

Hopefully I am going to find Beaver a friend soon, he seems to get a little bored although he has plenty of floor time .
