Star Hi

Hey Cavy lovers,
My name's Lynz and im new to your forum.
Im 22 and have been breeding guinea pigs for nearly 10 years now. I used to show but dont have the time anymore.
Ima fulltime Veterinary Nurse and i live in Melbouren, Australia.
I have around 20 guinea pigs at the moment. I have many breeds but i love my Shelties and Rex's. My 2 stud males are my "blonde" point and white Sheltie named "Fabio" he is the most beautiful guinea pig in the cosmos and a real ladies man and my other stud is a Silver Agouti and white Rex named Merlin he is only 5 mths old and still growing so yet to prove his studliness with my girls yet- He better toughen up first though my girls are bossy pigs!
Anyway hope to chat to ya online sometime and share my stories and advice.
Lynz xx

Re: Hi

Are your pigs spayed and neutered, or do you keep the boys and girls separatedly?

Welcome to the forum, but you should be aware that this place is very anti-breeding and pro-rescue

Re: Hi

All my babies are housed seperately and are only put into mate when of prime condition. I am a very responsible breeder and my babies are only housed to family and friends who i am happy with to take on my "kids". I never sell to pet shops and my babies are in very high demand for their looks and lovely nature.
I also rescue piggies that come into work (im a vet nurse) that are unwanted or to be euthanised. I get them healtjier and find them a loving homes.
Lynz
P.s Not all breeders are all irresponsible

Re: Hi

I'm sorry, but anyone who purposely breeds animals is irresponsible.

There is the same problem as in other countries with a Guinea Pig surplus (just ask enchantingcavy). Anyone who contributes to this can hardly be called "responsible".

Angry Re: Hi

Excuse me! Dont say your sorry when your clearly not, you dont know me nor do you know what kind of conditions my pigs are kept in. I have been a memeber on this site for 5 minutes and i dont appreciate Judgemntal small minded people such as yourself having a go at me because you think you know better.
So much for this board being a place to feel welcome.
Suddenly this site not seeming all that good after all, i just hope all members arent as nasty as you.
I came on this site not to be judged or abused but as a vet nurse i thought i may be able to help some people out with advise on health problems!

Re: Hi

What is it with people who can't read.
http://www.cavycages.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=54
This forum is run by a guinea pig rescue and is a RESCUE-FRIENDLY board.

Intentional breeding and/or showing "how-to" discussions are not welcome in this forum.
For more information on breeding, see Cavy Spirit's Breeding page.
What does it mean to be a so-called responsible breeder? Read this page to find out.
For accidental pregnancy information, see this GuineaLynx page.

You may have been a member for 5 minutes but you clearly have no idea of what you are a memeber of. We DO NOT advocate breeding for any reason. Thank you. You are out of place here and have no reason at all to get snotty. If you didn't want to be judged then you needn't have flaunted in our faces the fact you are a breeder.

Re: Hi

You are more then welcome to stay, however you need to understand that this board supports the rescue of pigs, not the propogation of more. The owner of this site, and many people working in rescue (including myself) see pigs euthed everday because homes cannot be found.

Frankly, you are part of the problem, not the solution.

Please take a good look around this forum and appreciate what you have walked into, this is not a breeder friendly board, you are welcome to stay, but discussing breeding is not.

As for your pigs, well, if they are your "babies" why do you continually risk their lives with pregnancy? 1 in 5 pregnancies, or 20% will run into complications that usually result in death. That does not sound like a whole lot of love to me...

Re: Hi

Welcome to the forum

I'm not going to make any personal comments but will just say that RSPCA Melb/Vic is one of the main rspca's in australia in the past year to have guinea pigs in all year long. I think our Brisbane Fairfield shelter is beyond a joke we have pedigree breeds popping up left right and centre and not just on and off but ALL YEAR LONG this year and in large numbers and not nesessarily coming FROM breeders themselves but they come from owners that breeders have sold to obviously without checking out the new homes very well at all...The longhairs alone in shelters this year I've seen are motheaten/suffering from mange/underweight/have been housed in lawn hutches when longhairs require absorbent bedding and specific coat care.
Anyhow my point is that they are a good example of just how many homeless pigs are out their this year...

My motto is that with all the animals people breed and sell they could instead be saving homeless pigs and then rehoming. This is why i mentioned the melb rspca as they are constantly getting in pigs and I use them as a good monitor I find of just how many pigs are homeless atm ). If i was breeding I would not have been able to take in around 100 guinea pigs and rehome them this year. That's 100 guinea pigs that would now be dead...well about 90% would be because most have been mistreatment/sick guinea pig cases. Australia has a very hidden problem that is getting worse within the pedigree piggy world it's mostly due to the newer breeders in my opinion but the fact remains it's here and anyone breeding throughout the year with no intention of keeping their offspring is quite simply adding to the problem...nobody has that many friends that ALL babies bred year after year could be sold to. Once you working within the welfare side of guinea pigs ( or any animals for that matter ) you just simply could never go back to the other side...you see how pointless it is and how the entire scene is for the benefit of the owner and not the animal ( mind you so many people make excuses to high heaven trying to pretend that the animal is the one benefiting or it's " breed " is ). Due to what I've seen over the past years I could never be proud to say " I'm a breeder " taking the time to get up close and personal with other breeders around yuo and to see what happens " behind the scenes " within some studs it's a huge eye opener well it was for me and I saw more than my fair share of enough after almost 2 years...Bleh I'm starting to go into one of my latest long rambles I'll stop here because if i go on it'll end up being another three pages ...all I can mention is to possibly get involved closer with the rspca or a largescale animal welfare system and you'll see why people react the way they do with regards to breeding

Jess

Re: Hi

Lynz - you are welcome to stay but Jdomans post was right on the money.

You have entered the domain of animal rescuers trying to make a differance in the animal overpopulation problem and help educate people on animal welfare.

I am sure you are a very nice and responsible person but if you are a breeder then, to us, you are part of the problem and not the solution. The world is overpopulated with GPs. They are dying every day because there are not enough responsible homes for them to go to and the rescues/shelters are full beyond overflowing. If you breed you are only adding animals to the population.

Like I said you are welcome to stay but it would be in your own best interest not to talk about breeding or showing and to not try at any point to undermine the values and morals of this forum.

Not sure what your "medical" advice will be but I will tell you now that we are very picky about people giving medical advice on this forum. We have very strict rules about it.

Please read this post- http://www.cavycages.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17032 and also read all the links in this forum section- http://www.cavycages.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=68.
