The time has come... ...for everyone to meet Fat Al. My girlfriend got him just before Christmas 2005 and he's been our special boy ever since. At first, he lived in a commercial cage but upon coming across this site and spending hours researching and learning about proper pig care....I decided to use what materials were at my disposal and build him a real home. Here is the result: ![]() ![]() ![]() And now...the man himself! ![]() And this is what he does best; eat! ![]()

Re: The time has come... Welcome! I haven't seen a cage like that before - though it looks a bit like a dog cage (?)- what did you make it from? He is a very handsome chap indeed - have you considered introducing a friend to him. Guinea pigs are really social animals, who need the company of other piggies!

Re: The time has come... It was a cage for a small animal such as a cat and so on. We've been considering another pig for him, since the gal and I can't be all that entertaining to him, haha. However, this cage is still temporary. I can't find a place that sells the grid panels and connectors like all of the users on here use. Once I do find some at a good price, I'll build a castle and perhaps get several pigs.

Re: The time has come... Yeah - that's good news! If you look on the home page to Cavy Cages - http://www.cavycages.com/ on the left hand side, is a box 'find materials' - click on 'found mine at' which will take you to where someone (hopefully near you) has found their grids etc. Hope you get some soon! Lets see pictures when it's done!

Re: The time has come... My daughter uses one of those kennels for her rabbit, Jack. The best part is she can just open the door whenever she's home and let him have the run of the room. He always goes back in to potty.

Re: The time has come... Welcome to the forum. Very cute pig! How big is the cage you have him in now? An alternitive to the cubes is wire shelving from home supply stores.

Re: The time has come... Well, I've been reading on this site for months now and I've learned where all the materials (coroplasts, grids, and so on) are available. But, none of the retailers, even some that are listed sell them. It's rather upsetting. The cage seems to be a pretty decent size for Al. I believe its exact dimensions are 2 feet by 4 feet. I've yet to go to Lowe's to see if they have any alternative building materials, however, one day soon I'll make it a point to do so.

Re: The time has come... Awesome pigger. That is a dog crate, we used one for our greyhound when she was a pup for housebreaking. I now utilize it for the piggers when I am home I take them out of their C&C cage, I open the door of the old doggy crate, and let the girlies run around, they go in there(the doggy crate) to use the restroom because it is so easy to run in and out, very close to the ground. They would run around all day if I would let them, which since I am a big softy they usually get their way. Excellent.

If it's grids you're having a hard time finding, you can order them online from stores such as Wal-Mart. There are a bunch of people who sell them on e-Bay for a decent price as well even after shipping and handling. |

Re: The time has come... You can use wire shelving from Lowe's or Home Depot that they will cut to size for you. Have you called the sign shops for coro? They all use it. Make sure you let them know it is for a guinea pig cage. They are not keen on DIY sign makers! Al if fabulous. Love the name.
