| New to guinea pigs Hello, My name is Samantha and we have one female guinea pig that we got about 6 weeks ago. If I had known how fun they are we would have gotten one sooner! We love her, her name is Jenio. She really belongs to my 6 year old son, but I help with all the care that she may need. We are an animal loving family and have many other animals. 3 dogs, 1 cat, 2 love birds, and my husbands salt water fish tank that we all love. Before any one chews us out for not getting Jenio from a rescue place, that is my fault I was unaware of there even being a need for rescues. Having animals, you would think that I would know that but I did not look into that part of getting a guinea pig before getting her. (If we ever get another one we will look for a rescue.) So I am hoping to do the best by this animal that I can and am hoping that this site will be the one for us. Thank you, Samantha |

| Re: New to guinea pigs Hi Samantha! It sounds like your place is a nice little zoo! Ours is, too. In addition to my 2 guinea pigs, we have a dog, a rat, shrimp, and fish. My husband also likes fish so we have 4 aquariums in sizes from 5 gallons to 125 gallons! I hope no one chews you out for not rescuing - I mean, who would want to give these cute guys up anyway? But now that we both know (I got a stern message in my intro) we can move on and talk about our pigs! Will you post a photo of Jenio? Now that you've seen this site, are you considering a second pig to complement your first one? There's a lot of information about piggies to process here! I hope you find all you need. |

| Re: New to guinea pigs Yes it is a zoo. But we are okay with that. We too have a 125 gallon fish tank being ready to set up. (We had to reinforce the floor. ) We added the guinea pig for our 6 year old son. But we have found that we all love her. I may think about letting her be a mommy but I am not sure we want to have two piggies. (I have read both postitive and unpostitive about that.) I still have more to read about that. Do they put guinea pigs out for stud? LOL Thanks, Sam Quote:

Speaking of getting your pig a friend, I can't express enough that you really should. They are herd animals and really 95% of them do best with company! |

PLEASE do not breed. It is dangerous to the pig, they don't "want" to have babies, and chances are she'll die, or the babies will die. It's a sad fact of life. Why not adopt her a friend instead so that she can live out her live with a hen-pal or a neutered boyfriend? |

| Re: New to guinea pigs Welcome to the forum. We all have done the stupid thing and bought before knowing better but now you know. I recommend getting a pal for your girl. They are herd animals and love to be around their "peers". |
