This is our new family!
Hi everyone! My name is Pamela. My boyfriend Anthony and I recently acquired two young cavies. The first one, Ernie, a cowlicky grey-brown Abyssinian, unexpectedly captured our hearts when we were at Petco buying supplies for our frog at the time, and we loved him so much we went back a month later to see if he was still there and he was! Neither of us has ever had a cavy before so it was an unexpected addition to our little family.
Shortly thereafter, I did a ton of reading about cavies and found out Ernie would be best with a buddy, so I told Anthony we had to find him a brother
We went through Petfinder to find some prospects and contacted the Critter Corral, a local Chicago suburban rescue.
Through them, we managed to find a very tame, well-tempered little guy to pair with Ernie (who turned out to be a raging alpha!), so we adopted the li'l skunky-looking guy and named him Leonard.
Both are under six months.
So far (it's been almost two months since we got them) they live as neighbors in a huge cubes & coroplast cage with a divider. We're taking introductions slowly, as they got along great several times and then in one emotionally traumatic incident started flying at each other. (I didn't find out till later than intros shouldn't be happening over and over again.)
Ideally, our boys will establish some kind of equilibrium one day and live together peacefully. They are so adorable and fluffy!
Check out the pictures attached to see our boys!

They are adorable! Critter Corral is a great rescue that I've adopted a few of my boys from. They have adoption events regularly and even a "Pig-nic" in June.

Welcome!...I would open the cage up to one big cage and let them do ..what they do. One will be the leader. Unless there is major bloodshed, that's the only time to separate them.

Congratulations on your family additions, and they are gorgeous! I'm so glad you read about cavies and decided to get a buddy for Ernie (love the names, by the way!). And, I'm even more glad you decided to rescue a piggie to do that! Enjoy...these little furballs will capture your heart!

Re: This is our new family!
Hi, Pamela! I volunteer with Critter Corral and live in the western suburbs. We're having our 12th Annual Open House on Sunday November 13th from 1 to 4 at The Willard Wood Park Center located at 515 1st St in Crete. We're having a guinea pig costume contest so you can bring along the boys dressed up if you decide you want to come. It's always fun. There are raffles, food, crafts for sale and guinea pigs for adoption. This is a great site; lots of good info.
