Are any shavings safe?
Since getting my piggy I've just been using recycled paper bedding and timothy hay, which she loves. Unfortunately it's an expensive combination (especially the recycled paper - you can only buy it in small bags here, and they only last for maybe 2 (small!) cage changes).
So I was wondering if there were any shavings that were ok - I know pine is too fragrant, but I noticed they did have birch - is it any different? Though I suppose there's also the matter of dust
There's wood chippy type stuff too, but I'm worried about that being splintery.
I sometimes buy supplies online here - do any of those look ok? (Sorry it's in Japanese, but a lot of them have pictures of the texture)
Any suggestions would be welcome!

Re: Are any shavings safe?
I have not heard of birch shavings. Pine is fine to use if it's kiln-dried.
See this page for more info on safe/unsafe bedding.

If you can get wood shavings even pine, it needs to be dried kilm If you can find that it will be safe to use

Re: Are any shavings safe?
I used to have a small animal cage from petco (or the like) and I used kiln-dried pine shavings, but I made the switch to a c&c cage and now i use fleece,it is a lot less money on the long run because you don't need to buy bedding, and I think it is easier to clean

A lot of people use fleece. Have you considered switching?

Re: Are any shavings safe?
Thanks for the advice! I have been interested by fleece since joining here, so on my way home, from work I went by the 100yen shop, turns out they did have small fleeces (albeit not goo quality) and also absorbent sheet/liners. So I went experimental just to see if she likes it. I wasn't sure because she did love foraging and rummaging around in her paper, but she seems perfectly happy on fleece. So I'll start looking into getting large size ones for when her new cage arrives

Looks good. Did you remember to wash the fleece several times before using?
You will want to find a different food pellet as well-- you want just a plain, high quality pellet.

She's still in her shuttle, but her new cage is arriving tonight
just as well, she's finally settling in and was racing around it like crazy last night! So we put her down in the run, but then i think she was embarrassed!
