I was reading the argument thread and noticed that when one poster used a curse word it was removed and pooed/wheeked yet when I read why another member had been pooed the reason included a curse word, crap. Where I live this is considered mild swearing and so I was thinking its not really suitable to be used here is it? with the minors? To be honest I was a little shocked and wouldn't be happy if my kid was on here and saw it. Just thought i'd point this out. |

Maybe you could pm me with a list of UK curse words so we mods know what to be on the lookout for. |

Its interesting as there are some words us english people consider really mild and that americans find really offensive, its works both ways. I just thought I'd bring it up as I don't think some parents would appreciate their kids reading some words on a family friendly forum, the word doesn't offend me but it might others. |

Yup, just to confirm what cookie gal is saying, the word 'crap' is frowned on in the UK - used a lot, and probably some would not consider it offensive at all (it doesn't really bother me - but working in a high school, I hear an awful lot worse!), though it is not really to be encouraged in childs speak. I can't think of any other words which are used here that may offend at the moment (and crap really is quite mild!) |

I agree, it seems that in some areas some words are considered worse than others. I think the best policy is: "If in doubt, use another word!" For example, the word mentioned above, if saying: "That guinea pig site's information is ****" You could say: "That guinea pig sites gives out-of-date, incorrect information because it says that wire floors are okay and..." Not only is it likely to be less offensive, it contributes information as to why the poster has a problem with the subject of the insult. This helps it to be a debate rather than a flame war. |
