My main problem is a syringe to administer the Ivermectin. What do you use and where did you get it? I tried CVS and the pet store but neither had one small enough. I'd rather not have to drive 40-45 minutes to his vet just to get a syringe if I don't have to.

How often should a healthy pig be scratching? My pigs (females) have been scratching quite a bit lately (more so than before at least) and I'm concerned they may have lice/mites (though now that I think of it if that's true the male pup I separated out recently would probably have them too as well as my other boar now, ugh!) I have checked them over and I can't seem to find any bugs/eggs or such and they definitely don't have hair loss or scabs. I think I will pick up some Ivermectin regardless, but I was curious if it sounds as though I'm jumping to conclusions? (which I do with all my animals/children hehe)

Okay my daughter came home and told me one of her friends has head lice. She said her head was itching and I figured I would check it even though I thought it was probably psychological. To my surprise I found one live adult head lice crawling in her hair. Not many nits on her head but we are going to treat everything anyways. My question is, can the guinea pigs get the lice? She spends a great deal of time cuddling with them and spent about an hour this evening cuddling with OddBall and of course he was crawling around all around her hair and on her bed. Do I need to worry about them getting the lice? If I do, what can I treat them with? Do I need to take them into the vet? Any help would be appreciated.

One of my pigs name's is Nismo, and he's a little over 4 years old. Nismo has had health issues for a couple of year, and most recently last month had Xrays done and the vet was concerned that Nismo was showing signs of possible arthritis and vitamin C deficiency. He also suffers from his jaw being misaligned, so his incisors grow very fast and they have to be trimmed regularly. With all of this, the vet sent him home with some non-steroidal inflammatory medication, as well as a recommendation to give him liquid vitamin c (concentrated not in his water) with a syringe once a day. His biggest concern is that in the Xrays Nismo's back is very arched and he seems to walk with a sway/hobble.

With that backstory, we had a scary incident this morning. I woke up to find my Nismo on his side struggling to get up. I tried to stand him up and noticed immediately his front left leg wasn't working and he couldn't stand up. I threw on some clothes and took him into the ER Vet immediately. After looking him over, his vet (he was able to see his regular vet) has a few concerns. He said first he wants to put him on steroidal medication now, which although stronger he feels may help more. But he thinks that Nismo's issues may be neurological in nature, and its possible he could have maybe a pinch in his spine or something, especially since his back is so arched. He wants to try these meds first before trying to do something like an MRI. He says at this point he's not sure if it does have to do with his spine if it's fixable, it would be more of a situation where we just want to keep treating him to give him a decent quality of life. So here is where we are now, they are giving him an injection of a vitamin c supplement as well as some steroidal medication and they are also trimming his incisors again before sending him home. They are also going to conduct a series of blood tests to check for any other possible problems with liver, other organs, etc. The vet said that Nismo is standing up at this point, and is wobbly but he can walk, so I'm happy to hear that. And he'll be sent home with some oral meds.

My poor pig, it's one health issue after another with him =(. I guess I just wanted to see if by any chance anyone had ever experienced these kinds of problems with any of your pigs, and maybe wanted to share what the situation was and the outcome? Or any advice you may have. Thank you.

PS: Currently they (Nismo and his cagemate Momo) have Carefresh as bedding in their entire cage. I'm thinking of switching at least a portion of the cage back to fleece to maybe make it easier for Nismo to walk around. But I'm worried that if he does fall again, that it won't be as soft of a fall with just fleece as opposed to the fluffy carefresh. What do you all think?

Okay, I have read all the threads I could about skin problems but can't seem to find one that fits my piggies problem. Scabbers started to scratch himself with his teeth on his back towards the side (I think thats the only place he can reach) about 2-3 weeks ago. Didn't seem like much but we have since found a bald spot with a tiny scab in the middle from him biting himself. Now he is getting a small bald spot on the other side..you can see where he gets to himself by the green on his white fur left over from his meal :) Anyway, it isn't red and doesn't even seem scaley..he is only missing hair where he has chewed it off. Could he just be getting dry skin now that the heat has been coming on in our home? Harley, his girlfriend, doesn't seem to be having any problems. If I absolutely have to take him to the vet I will but between 4 other piggie visits (one being Harley's pregnancy scare) and our beloved dog being put down I have spent over $1,000 dollars in the last 10 weeks. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to help Scabbers from feeling itchy?

I had Tahiri, Kimi, and Leonidas out for floortime. Please read whole post before responding- I want thurough answers.

I lifted and moved the pigloo because they edged it into a spot that I didn't want it to be, Tahiri was the only one under it. She scattered, but there was a small red spot on the floor where she was sitting.

I picked her up, and looked at her bottom and genitals. There was some blood on her fur to the left of her genitals, and a little bit on the lower right portion of her genitals.

I cotton swab and warm watered all of that off, and looked for further bleeding or scrapes... there were none. I thought maybe it was due to having intercourse with our neutered male? There wasn't any blood where her pee comes out and it was a very tiny amount of it on the floor.

It was then that I noticed a small mass just behind her genitals, having just got males I figured it may have been boar glue and mineral oiled her and worked it off- there was something stuck in her fur, I couldn't tell if it was feces or glue. Some of it was too close to her skin and so I snipped the fur off, after a few snips, she squeaked.

I took a closer look at it and noticed a raised tiny bump, fewer than 4 mm across. It was bleeding a little, I'm guessing because I nicked it with the scissors. :( I felt so bad... but moving on.

She hasn't been scratching, there are no signs of mites.

She's 5 years old, I know my grandmother's dog has gotten bumps as it aged- do guinea pigs do the same?

I just took her to the vet last month and she's was on anti and pro biotics along with her cagemates because of a possible URI for ten days, which ended last Wednesday. She's had overgrowth/spurs on her paws before, which I have trimmed off with no problem.

Input on the cause of this tiny bump is appreciated. It's too small for me to take photos.

I did find another thread with a similar question posed, but there was no resolution.

Hi everyone. One of our girls (we have seven pigs total), Posey, is around 7 months old, and is a short-haired white abysinnian. She's got a pair of issues and we've been trying to figure out whether they're related or not. She's been to the vet twice, and the vet was not able to find a real diagnosis.

The first and more concerning of the two problems is that she tends to get sneezy and wheezy, but this is something that only seems to happen when she's up and moving around the cage (and even then, only sometimes), and when we hold her. Of course our vet fully checked out her lungs and said they sounded fine. It seems that the problem is some sort of mild inflammation of her nose, but is not any sort of infection, bacterial or viral. She did give us some Metacam which we are going to try to see if it makes a difference as far as the inflammation, but we're not sure whether keeping her on that permanently is a good idea. Other than the wheezing/sneezing, she seems very healthy. She's been gradually putting on weight, eats normally (although we don't really see her drink much), and has lots of energy as most pigs do.

The second, and weirder of the two issues is that her fur has all of these green patches on it, particularly on the underbelly and underneath her chin, (which may just be due to eating wet dark green lettuce leaves). The vet noticed this and thinks that her urine is green, and said it wasn't a big deal, but it still seems pretty strange. We've got another all-white pig, and she's never been green before! Is green urine something that should be a concern?

When I picked him up, he seemed completely normal. This thing sticking out was quite wet, and I'm quite worried. What is it??
Help!

I have a pregnant sow. We estimate she is somewhere between 60 and 70 days pregnant. She has seen the vet (last month for a checkup) and has never had any kind of medical issues. Today though I woke up to a cage/pigs covered in soft unformed stool. yuck!

I have a pregnant sow. We estimate she is somewhere between 60 and 70 days pregnant. She has seen the vet (last month for a checkup) and has never had any kind of medical issues. Today though I woke up to a cage/pigs covered in soft unformed stool. yuck!

After watching them over a period of time today I was able to determine that it was my pregnant sow who has the issue. I have not changed her diet at all and she has not lost any weight. She has been drinking more water as expected but with all the additional water she is drinking plus her normal amount of greens could this be what is causing her diarrhea? I put her in a separate cage so I can watch her to see if her poop returns to normal. That and I had to clean out my cage today because of the issue so I don't really want her to make another mess in the cage.

At what point should I make an appointment with my vet?
