Its winter downunder at the moment and I left the towel wrap for them in there home and when i woke the next morning 1 of my poor little ladies got herself caught in some loose threads from the towels edge.It caught between her arm pit and around her neck. I rescued her and cuddled her for the next hour while my heart came down off a thousand beats whaaa........lesson learned! My issue now is she has an abrasion under her arm pit and around her neck where she has tried in vane to release herself. The scab under her arm is getting bigger with her scratching it. Is there creams or should I salt bath her?

I think this is more amusing than anything, and I don't find it to be much of a concern. But Bartholomew in particular is so nippy! I don't confuse the terms "biting" with "nipping" as it very rarely hurts and has never once broken the skin. I was just curious, is this a playful behavior? When he's wheeking and popcorning, runs up to me, and nibbles on my hands? Roland does it too, but he's a lot more gentle. Bartholomew is also the dominant pig, so is he trying to give me a message when I have my hands in their cage? They are over a year old now, so is this something that will fade, like with puppies? Or do Guinea Pigs always nip on skin?

When I got home last night I looked out of my bedroom window to see that in my neighbours garden their lone guinea pig was being chased by a young kitten with my neighbours laughing at it as if it was just playing. I couldn't believe it! All I could think of was that poor piggy being chased. Although I think it may have just been play as the kitten is tiny it makes me wonder what will happen when the kitten grows up and knows it can "play" with the guinea pig. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this?

So, I currently have a 2x6 for my two girls. I had them in a 2x5 since the beginning of April, moved them to a new room and put them in a 2x4 but they kept... growling at each other. That weird clicking noise - Gaby would just kinda walk around stiffly while Xena followed her, nose to butt, around. Then they'd jump, switch, and the other would growl :P I figured it was the space thing, so I made it bigger, and boom - no issues. My cage is empty right now save for a little box I got when I needed emergency hay and petsmart was closed, which is the only place in town to buy Oxbow.

Long story short (sorry!), I'm paranoid that if I make a loft, it'll need to be supported in the middle, but that would make it really difficult to pull the fleece up. So, I guess my question is, do I need to have the middle supported? I'm thinking of just making a 2x1 loft for their kitchen, and having a fleece forest dangling below for their hidey/home. They use a wooden hut right now which is just getting too small for them, although they like to sit with their noses both right at the edge, and they just look so cute...

Anyway. :P Advice would be nice :)

I am currently living with an aunt that has made me keep the pigs' cage outside. The thing is, it's almost winter here and I'm very worried about them. She says she's allergic to the pigs' smell and won't listen to any of my explanations on why they should be inside.
I have been sneaking them in at night to my room, bc temps are around 3-4 Cº at night, but as I have a fairly big C&C cage, I bring them indoors in a travel cage (obviously smaller, and I don't think they're feeling comfortable in there, but it's better than the cold outside), the thing is is there any way to keep the cage insulated or warm at night? They are against a corner wall so there would be only two sides to cover.
So please if you're just gonna reply with "Don't keep pigs outside it's bad for them" trust me, I know, but I really can't do anything about it (She says it's the pigs outside in the backyard or I am gonna have to find a place to live, which is currently impossible)

It will be 2 weeks on Friday since I've had the 3 rescues. Cookie, the female is doing very well and has come out of her shell SOOO much with in this last week.

The 2 boys I am fostering have only had 1 true potential adopter. I had to turn this person down since she was young and didn't have a job to support the piggies. Her mother told her that the daughter would have to pay for everything the pigs needed- do not sure how that is possible without money. :/

My requirements are high for a good reason- I want these boys to find an amazing forever home that can and will provide in every way they will need through out their life.

I have found myself starting to fall in love with them and their cute, feisty ways. My hubby told me if we still have them when July gets here we can take down the ads and keep them.

How do you foster parents keep your hearts out of fostering/ recusing any pets? I have a big heart when it comes to animals, as most of you do (if not all!). This is my first foster and I've totally found out that it's not for me.

Thanks guys!

Hi,
Is it because they are unhappy? They are in a 2x6 c&c cage and everytime after cage cleans I always sit by to see if they'll popcorn but they NEVER do! They also don't run laps in their cage, mostly just sit and eat hay, then after spends 5 mins to just walk around the middle of the cage and then goes back to their sleeping area. It feels like I'm a bad owner! Even when they get their veggies they don't squeak as much. Does anybody else's pigs do that? I really wish they would because I always hear about pigs popcorning cuteness haha. This also makes me think it'd be okay to make their cage smaller, what do you guys think? Since they don't run laps AT ALL, would it be okay if I downgrade their cage to a 3x3 cage?

Thanks!!

I'm curious about what everyone calls their piggies aside from their actual names...not including when they are misbehaving and something like "you little @^*(%^!" gets said, LOL! lol

GP: "Geepers", "big girl" (as she is bigger than Fergs), "goofball", "mellow girl" and "G" (as in, "what up, G"?).
Ferguson: "Fergs", "Fergie" (or a combination thereof like "Fergiefergs"), "little girl", "squirmy", and "sweetie".
They both get called "Fuzzbutts" and "Little Poopers"!
The hubby can't be bothered to remember their names so to him they are "the big one" and "the little one". (He loves 'em anyhow!!) lol

I have had this little guy since he was a baby and got him in February. I have noticed that his hair on the top of his back, above his bottom, has been growing longer and longer. I have been combing it and keeping it looking nice. It is only on the top and doesn't travel down into his butt area. From one of the photos you can see I can make a pony tail with it and see how it is normal length underneath? I was told that the mom is an Abby and dad was an albino. I am assuming he was a short hair, otherwise she would have said long hair.
Has anyone else had guinea pigs with strange hair growth patterns?

for everyone who likes Yesterdays News Cat Litter, I found anoter brand thats half the price and the exact same thing!! Its called ExquisiCat Paper litter. It comes in Pine, wheat, corn and paper but im not sure if the corn and wheat are safe. The paper works great!! I have two long haired bunnies and it does not get stuck to there hair. It also absorbs very well. This is a great product and it was $11.99 for a 25lb bag. where as a 30lb bag of yesterdays news is $19.99! I hope this helps people who are tight for money or just want to save.

So i posted this past saturday abt having to put pearls baby girl to sleep:( it was very sad but veterinarian said it was for the best and i know it was. Pearl has been searching for her baby and then seeming kinda depressed. So i knew when the time was right i would adopt another companian for Pearl. I regularly look at craigslist and found an add for a mother guinea pig with 6 babies who were 2 weeks old and the father all looking for a new home. I spoke with her and the father was not seperated and now the mother is pregnant again they are pretty sure. I told her if she can keep the babies with mom till at least 3 weeks( the girls) that i would love to have one. She said she was giving them all away today! And already gave two away a few days ago. So .... I didnt know what to do but i really wanted them to stay with their mom buy knew she was giving them all away anyway. So i took the biggest healthiest looking girl:) im soo happy that i was able to give a good home to one:). She is already giving away the mom and dad to seperate homes. I sure hope someone good gets the mother. I wanted her but i didnt want to deal with the stress of another pregnant female. Plus she is "roan" i beleive is what its called so huge chances of babies with problems. The dad is a (silky?) sorry i do not know all my guinea pig breeds but i beleive thats what she called him. And he has very long hair. So my baby may end up with long hair :) i need tons of advice for introducing her to pearl and name ideas. She is black and white:)

My Violet just had her first litter. They were born shortly before 5:30 AM this morning and she had three. When i got home from work one had sadly passed but i had a sneaking suspicion this was going to happen as it was not moving very well compared to the other two. I grew up on a farm but raised much larger animals (pigs, horses, cattle) and with pigs we had to make sure the sow was separated from the piglets by a wall that would allow her to nurse them but not lay on them so she would not accidentally kill them. I got home about an hour ago and have removed the deceased pup. I want to make sure the other two survive. Mother is tending to them and does not seem to be rejecting them. I am not trying to handle them but i will have to move them temporarily so i can change out the bedding in the cage once my wife gets home from work to assist me.

I have Oxbow Young guinea and Adult Guinea pig food for them. I have Fresh Romaine Lettuce, Seedless Grapes, Kiwi, Zucchini, and Carrots in for all to eat, Timothy hay in abundance and fresh water. mom and babies are housed with another female Pig. I am getting conflicting advice from different locations about removing the non-mother from the cage. Please any advice that you can give me to make sure these younglings get the best possible chance at leading a full life would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
