For my first few blog entries, I'll post my progress in training my little piggy, Hershey.

Today is Day 2 of training her to "jump" (stand on her hind legs) and I've noticed a little progress. She seems to stand up and grab her parsley more quickly than yesterday when I hold it above her. I think she's starting to realize that when I say "jump" and hold veggies above her head, she needs to stand up to get them.

I ordered a training clicker on Amazon, and I'll try and incorporate that into our routine.

More updates coming soon!

It's just a little tool that clicks when you press a button. Before using it, you "charge the clicker" by feeding a treat, clicking, feeding a treat, clicking, and so on. Then your pet will associate the clicker with good things, and you can press the button when he or she performs a trick correctly, thus giving instant gratification.

They're mainly used for dogs, but can be used for other animals.

I have two. Scarlet is the one in my avatar, and her daughter , Hershey, is a black-and-white Abyssinian. Yourself?

How'd you learn how to train her? Is there a book? Online videos? I'd love to teach my girl some tricks :)

There isn't really a set-in-concrete method. If you incorporate food, though, you might have a trainable piggy on your hands. It all depends on your individual pig, though. I haven't noticed much progress in training Hershey these past few days, so who knows? She might catch on, she might not.

You can train your pigs to do lots of things. I'm working on "jump," by holding up some veggie above her head. She'll reach up to get it, and I say "jump" as she does. When she starts to realize that "jump" + something above head = yummy food reward, she might learn the trick and do it on command.

You can teach them to run in a circle by having them chase a veggie while you say "circle," teach them to kiss by holding a bit of lettuce in your mouth and saying "kiss" when they come to get it, teach them to ring a bell by ringing it and then giving them food, and so on. Be creative! I'd love to hear any ideas you have. Let me know if you start training your piggies!

New discovery: you can edit others' comments on your blog posts.

Cavies are love, I fixed a small typo in your comment.

This is pretty neat.

yayyy and congrats on getting some progress. Im also training Bailey and Mocha. Bailey and Mocha are in training. So far Bailey knows paw (i hold out my hand and say paw and she puts it there) Up (basically stretch and reach) up up (stand all the way up with perfect posture (it helps shes not a chubby butt lol) Come (i say Bailey and she comes not much of a trick but still) Climb (she loves to climb so i make her do it for fun lol) and sit (she sits up on her hind legs and puts her font paws out like begging). so there are some ideas. Mocha can do paw, Up up, sit and come (she basically mastered the day i got her cause she cant have 20 minutes wihout me checking on her lol)

I think Bacon's mine trainable pig. He'll do anything for food, and he's more mellow than Eggs. I think I may have a trick boy on my hands. :)
