I voted pet store although I get it from For Other Living Things and not one of the big chains.

Re: Hay Poll II (Where you buy your hay)

At first I bought my hay from a pet shop, it costed me about $12 for a single flake of hay, I realised how silly I was being, and now I buy bales at a time from a friend of mine that owns a stable. It costs me $3.50 for the entire bale... a little easier to afford.

Re: Hay Poll II (Where you buy your hay)

I have had a load of trouble with hay. First we used to get from our local farm which was 50p a sack. It was wet hay which didn't last long and the farmer was unpleasant. So we started buying from another farmer, who happened to me the husband of my mum's friend. That was good, only £2 for a large bale. Thing was, the pigs started getting mites. We were pretty sure it was from the hay. So now we're buying it from the petshop which is £4 a sack. It's so expensive for just a little sack.

Pigs can't get mites from hay. They lay dormant in the pig until they are stressed or sick, then they become active.

Re: Hay Poll II (Where you buy your hay)

We buy ours from a local farmer for $2 a bale. Its really cheap and I am happy with the service and also with the hay. I currently only have last years cut, but it was stored so well that the inside is still nice and green. As soon as this bale is done, I will be going to get a bale of this years cut.

Re: Hay Poll II (Where you buy your hay)

Mites can't survive on hay and I thought they were fairly species specific. Meaning to get mites from hay the hay would have to be in contact with a guinea pig that had mites right before you put it in with your guinea pigs. The chances of that are very slim.

Re: Hay Poll II (Where you buy your hay)

I didn't vote because I buy from three that are listed. Kleenmama's, Sweet Meadow and Oxbow.

I did a search for hay mites and yes, there is a species that can indeed live in hay, especially hay that is stored in plastic. Hay mites have infected species of animals including sheep, horses, cows and smaller animals.

Re: Hay Poll II (Where you buy your hay)

I voted Chain Store. But I'm very careful about it ever since I bought one bag that smelled awful - as if there was something dead in it. I threw it away at once. Now I always poke my nose into the bag to smell if it's okay.

And I'm thinking of buying hay in a horse food store in the future.

Re: Hay Poll II (Where you buy your hay)

I voted Pet Store but it's not really a pet store. It doesn't sell pets - its a Pet Food/Supply store called PetValu - they sell some of the nicest and locally (SW Ontario) grown timothy hay that I have been able to find living in Toronto.

Interesting. I'm pretty sure it was listed on guinealynx as they couldn't or maybe I just heard it from several people on there.
