Awsome Tim Hay in MA + Petco gripe

My son and I first went to Petco today to buy some Timothy Hay (Kaytee)-Yuck. It was all brown and full of thistles. My local Petco is usually quite wonderful with their fish and small animals (fish particularly) but today I'm starting to lose faith in them. Not to go off on a tangent, but it looked like the bedding hadn't been changed in a while. The Carefresh was so high in the mouse cages that the tip of the water bottles was submerged in bedding and the mice had to tunnel to reach it. They also had a $1200 parrot that was desperate for attention. It didn't care much for my 4 year old-and who could blame it, but as soon as I started soothingly talking to it, it started climbing upside down and putting it's head through the bars so I would pet it (I didn't, I don't know squat about touching birds).

Anyway, we went to another smaller petstore and they had the Best Timothy Hay. It's called Sweet Meadow Distributers out of Sherborn, Massachusetts. It's a lovely green and you can smell it as soon as you get near it. Not one brown piece in it. It cost $4.99 for a net weight of 20 oz. So, it's a little expensive but gorgeous stuff. I think I'm more excited than Hammy! Any of you living in Massachusetts may want to give to give it a try.

I've heard good things about their hay also. If you interested in purchasing a large amount they have a website you can order off of: www.sweetmeadowfarm.com/index.asp

Glad you kicked that Kaytee to the curb!

Sweet Meadow Hay

I'm a convert from Oxbow to Sweet Meadow Hay...it's less dusty, smells great and it all gets eaten! A few local pet stores sell it...but their web site is reasonably priced also.

Sweet Meadow Hay update

...I recently discovered that Sweet Meadow farm is just 40 minutes drive away from me. The owners are great...I picked up four 60 lbs bales from them for $10 a bale!!! And they gave one of them to me for free as I plan to donate it to the MSPCA.

Hay vs. Carefresh bedding

Hello All!
I am new to this forum and have a 6 month old male GP named Mel. I am now using Carefresh bedding wich works fine but i go through a lot of it. This maybe a stupid question but I will ask anyway. Hay bedding I assume is better but what is the difference between the Timothy hay they eat and the Hay used for bedding? Can I buy timothy hay for bedding or is their a difference?
