This hay is really popular here.

27$ for 45 LBS?!?!!? Thats crazily cheap! WOW. What is the difference between 2nd and 3rd cut timothy hay?
and omg! 50lbs of timothy choice pellets for 30.00$ that is too good to be true... WOW. and just to make sure i feed my 2 year old pigs timothy pellets not alfalfa?
Well, you have to add the shipping cost. Since you're in California it shouldn't be too bad.
Yes, you should be feeding timothy pellets. Her pellets are actually the top recommended pellet brand here. Her hay is also very lovely green and leafy. 3rd cut is softer than 2nd cut. Some people prefer that for their pigs. I just stick to regular 2nd cut.
Make sure you store the hay properly when ordering larger amounts. They need to be in a cool, well-ventilated area. I just remove the plastic bag it comes in and dump it into the shipping box. I also stab some holes in the box for extra measure.
Yes, timothy not alfalfa for 2 year old pigs.
The difference between 2nd and 3rd cut is when in the year the crop was harvested. 2nd cut is harvested earlier than 3rd.
2nd cut has more stems and seed heads. 3rd has fewer stems and is more leafy.
Personally, I have tried both 2nd and 3rd cut and while 2nd is very good, I much prefer 3rd cut Timothy.
Yeah, 45 pounds is an incredibly large amount of hay. You'd still be saving. With such a large shipment just be sure to store it nicely. Some people also use those mesh laundry hampers: Amazon.com: Whitmor 6155-699 18 Inch Collapsible Hamper, White With Blue Trim: Home & Kitchen
I'd keep it in the garage and have another smaller bin or something that you can go to daily....I bought the 45 pound bag back in January and still have TONS left (and I have two pigs!), but the scent is very strong (it smells like good, fresh hay!) and definitely made my basement smell like hay!
Well for 45 pounds I'd think you may need more than one hamper too. Lol.
I've ordered that amount once and I was up to my ears in hay.The bale comes compressed and when you start distributing it fluffs out a lot. How big is your closet? I never shut my closet doors since they're those loud sliding ones. As long as it's open I wouldn't think it to be a huge deal to store it in there. Perhaps you could even get away with keeping it half-open.
I love how excited you are! I was the exact same way when I discovered KMS...which is why I bought the biggest box of hay available and the biggest bag of pellets!! Although, since I am in Minnesota, it cost just as much to ship it as it cost normally- but it was still a huge money saver! The biggest battle was convincing my boyfriend that although its a large investment now, it will pay off in the end. And here we are, months later, with plenty of pellets and hay![]()

How many pigs do you have? 50lbs of pellets is a lot!! Since each pig should only get 1/8 - 1/4 cups a day, it will last you years.
Edit to add:
I have 4 pigs. I ordered 25lbs of pellets in January and still have some left.
Pellets lose some of their stuff like Vitamin C very quickly, so I would recommend only getting the 5 pound bag which will still last about a year (very ruffly estimated) at 1/8 a cup per pig.
I think PigP has a typo. Maybe she meant 25lbs.
KMS only guarantees that the vit C in their pellets is stable for 225 days (check the site). It's approximately 7.5 months. So don't overbuy.
@Lord_aperture As I said it was just a really ruff estimate, I wouldn't really know seeing as I have three and not two, I was only trying to point out the fact that small sizes last quite long, therefore should not be bought in bulk.
At 1/8 cup per pig per day, five pounds of pellets will last two pigs 2-3 months, depending on whether they finish them all every day, spill a lot, etc.
