Does anyone know anything about growing wheatgrass for piggies?

I shake out my bedding in my flower beds and discovered hay growing. Last week, I pulled up the 15 or so clumps I could find and transplanted it in a small area that faces east under my kitchen window. I don't know how fast it'll grow but I figured I might get some fresh hay for my pigs from it. I tried to look up growing hay online but there wasn't much info so I'm winging it here. I know it doesn't die out over the Winter so I'm hoping to keep growing it. If this seems to work, I plan to do a larger, raised bed in a larger area in my yard.
They have indoor starter kits in some health food places, as well as online. They'll have instructions on how to grow them.
You can also buy pre-grown wheatgrass trays at grocery stores, even Safeway!
A big issue I had when growing them myself was mold due to improper seed spacing.
I bought a couple of packs of pet grass from our local grocery store last year. I ended up with some sort of gnats flying all over my house that must have bedded into the soil. I don't think I'd buy any of the ones that are already growing if I kept the plants indoor. I'd buy sterile potting soil and seed packs, if you can find them That way, you won't bring any critters in your house with the plants.
I grow pans of wheat grass for the pigs and they love it! All you have to do is just buy one of those pans that are used to grow seeds, put some dirt in, pour a bunch or the seeds on top of the dirt, and water it. @MissJean How do they get mold from being improperly spaced? I thought is was just if you watered them too much.
Haha I don't have much of a green thumb, and the first time I tried growing it, I ended up with muddy, moldy mess from over watering.![]()
@PigPandemonium ...where did you find the seeds? I've seen some places online you can buy them but would rather find them in a store to avoid shipping.
I want to try this! I'm going to keep a look out for seeds or trays.
I bought wheat grass pre-grown from Safeway, and I was trying to keep it growing so I only fed them part of it and within 2 weeks of buying it the bottom was moldy and grossI'm going to try to grow it on my own now, spacing it a little better and using gravel in the bottom to avoid soggy roots... Good luck!

my local shop-rite has organic wheat berries (wheat grass seeds) i think it's bob's mill or something like that. it's in the baking aisle. i tried to grow wheat grass on cotton balls in plastic plant saucers, and found that while the grass grew, the mold did too. growing it in soil was too messy. it grew pretty slow too. i've tried many times now, and it doesn't seem worth all the fuss. i guess wheat grass just doesn't like my house!
So green grass greens and say hay are OK? I know. Feed fresh greens, vegies and such. Can't help but wonder if fresh grass'es and hay's are good. I suppose I'm thinking about horse's and other farmies that get impacted with to many fresh goodies.
