    Lettuce help?

Hey everyone, so I feed my guinea pigs 1 big piece of ROMAINE lettuce everyday. I have seen a lot of debate saying you shouldn't feed this everyday because of calcium. What type of lettuce is safe to feed everyday that wont increase the risk of bladder stones, etc. I know to NEVER FEED ICEBURG. but Im confused if romaine is safe to feed everyday

Red and leafy green lettuce are fine everyday. Check out this chart http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...tml#post254730 . Romaine should not be fed daily according to most people I have seen discussing it. Read this thread as well http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...tml#post254731 it discusses whats on the chart.

    Re: Lettuce help?

Pretty much any leaf lettuce is safe. Romaine isn't high in calcium, and in fact has the same level as red leaf lettuce, and not every pig will have a problem with romaine - it's just that some will have gritty urine as a result of eating romaine. No one really knows why, though.

    Re: Lettuce help?

Alright thank you. I havent seen any white spots in their urine. But Ill keep a closer eye out to make sure there isnt any. I think I may switch to green leaf and red leaf because the romaine lettuce at my store is starting to be all brown and not very good quality anymore. I noticed all the stores near me Romaine lettuce qualitys has gone down. Is anyone else having this problem?

I never see good romaine (so sad it is MY favorite), but read and leafy green is usually really fresh for me.

    Re: Lettuce help?

I go to Sams Club, and I get 1lb (yes, 1 POUND) of organic baby spring mix for $3.90. That's what all my babies eat. There is a mix of up to 12 different types of lettuce in there (I think). They love it, and it's fun watching them pick out their favorites first before eating the rest. So far, this is the cheapest way I've found to get their leafy greens, then I just add whatever from the regular grocery store. I found WalMart had green peppers for .74 cents each this week, so that's what everyone is getting. I also bought the rescue lady I got my Guinea Girls and bunnies from a membership so she can get her greens cheaper. She said the same size tub was $6 in the local grocery store.

    Re: Lettuce help?

I agree about the romaine only bothering some piggies. My pigs have had it since they were little, and no issues. You've just got to watch. My girls can't stand bell peppers either. I always give it to them, and they eat their lettuce first then pick at the peppers hours later.

OMG! ROFL! I howled when I read that! My dog would love it! He stands next to me as I chop their veggies waiting for any to drop, so I make sure he gets a piece of green pepper and a piece of carrot. I did try to feed my bunny cauliflower and broccoli once. He chucked the cauliflower in to the corner, but man! did I get the stink eye over the broccoli. Apparently he found it very offensive, so he stomped it into mush!

That cracked me up. "He found it very offensive, so he stomped it into mush" Sound like something my Lilly would do. She gets very upset if I dont give her, her tomatoes or carrots. She will go to the food dish and dig through everyuthing until she finds what she is looking for. If she doesnt she chatters and makes the other pigs leave until she finds her carrot or tomatoe. She is way too spoiled and a brat. But you gotta love em!

I am constantly amazed by the amount of attitude a 2 lb animal can throw around. And WE RUN to do their bidding! Bunnies don't even make noise, and Calvin rules the roost! LOL, they're lucky we love them!

    Re: Lettuce help?

I wish my pigs would eat the bell peppers. They are always on sale. Today we ran out of carrots and my pigs were in a bad mood! So they were upset all day until tonight at 7 pm my dad brought me to the store to get carrots. I went to give them to them and I couldnt even get the cage door open before they were jumping on my hand to get the carrots
