Oxbow - Cavy Cuisine and Bunny Basics
So, a dear sweet friend went out and purchased a big bag of Oxbow hay and 5 lb bag of pellets.... Oxbow adult bunny pellets
.
I did not realize it till I had opened the bag so there is no chance to return it.
As you know, Oxbow ain't cheap so I do not want to dump it and I don't know anyone with a bunny.
I checked out the ingredients and the only difference between the cavy cuisine and the bunny is vitamin C.
If my boys are already getting their daily dose of vitamin C with their bell pepper (which they all devour), can I go ahead and use this bag of Oxbow?
I didn't have the heart to tell my friend he had gotten the wrong type.

Kim, I have the Cavy Health book by Guinea Lynx and it states not to feed rabbit pellets to guinea pigs because they do not contain Vitamin C and some may even include antibiotics toxic to cavies. It was very nice of your friend to buy those items for you though.

Re: Oxbow - Cavy Cuisine and Bunny Basics
Oxbow do not add antibiotics to their Pellets, very few companies do that these days. However, I have a friend who was using Bunny Basics for her pigs and the pigs (emergency, she ran out of Cavy Cuisine and was waiting for it to come in) were having issues with their poop, it was very small and dark and had a strange odour. When she switched back to the Cavy Cuisine the poop became normal again over-night. She has no idea why this happened as the ingredients are virtually identical.

If it is a store you normally do business with, they "might" take the bag back and discount it for another customer. It wouldn't hurt to ask. Otherwise, you might donate it to a rescue or even put it on Craigslist. Some bunny lover might be very happy to have it.
