    Planet Guinea

Has anyone had experience ordering grass seeds from Planet Guinea? Since we're dead in the middle of winter, I was considering doing a flat of grass for the boys to graze on.

If anyone has ordered, do you know if they ship to the US? I've emailed them to ask and am waiting to hear. I supposed I could just try to grow it from seed from the nursery, but this sounds like they've tailored it for guineas.

I haven't tried either one of those, but a bag of wheat seed, enough for about 15-20 plantings, costs $3 at my health food store. A bag of potting soil, good for about 10-15 plantings, is about $5. You spread the seeds on the potting soil and lightly water them, and you've got grass for a long time. I got cuttings off my first two for at least a month, and they would have lasted longer if one of the kids hadn't waaay overwatered them.

What do you grow yours in? I'm thinking tomorrow I shall put some seeds in a litter tray and have a whole forage for the piggies!!

    Re: Planet Guinea

I have had NO luck with the wheat grass thing. I have tried 6-7 times now. I put it in carefresh once, I cut it off once it grew and it never grew back. The inch that I left didnt grow for 3 weeks and then it started to mold. I have use several different kinds of containers from plastic, metal, ceramic, cardboard. Nothing worked. I have tried carefresh, dirt, potting soil and nothing. I have watered it too much, watered it not enough. I have poured water on with a cup and sprayed water on with a water bottle. I have done it in the spring, summer, fall and winter. I have put it in sun and shade, I have alternated sun and shade. I have tried a lamp. I have gotten bags and bags of wheat grass. I just dont know what to do. I have never been able to grow squat and because our apartment sprays their grass the boys dont get to have that experience. I am bummed.

I posted this thread before I found this link to growing wheatgrass.

    Growing Wheat Grass

I'm thinking I'm going to go the route that bpatters suggests and use the newspaper/large underbed clear plastic container method as shown in the link. Hope it works. I'm a confirmed brown thumb!

Onetwo, do you have a window that gets some sunlight? If so, it's really pretty easy to grow.

I put a paper towel on a plate, spread a layer of seeds out over it, put another towel on top, and pour about a fourth of a cup of water on the seeds. I leave them about 24 hours, checking a couple of times to make sure the towels are damp. This jump starts the seeds, and makes the grass grow quicker.

I then put about an inch or two of potting soil in a container (plastic box), sprinkle the seeds over it, and cover them with another quarter of an inch of potting soil. I water it very lightly, and put the container in the window.

Other than watering it every day (my containers are about 4 inches x 10 inches, and I put no more than half a cup of water in per day), there's nothing to do.

BUT, wait until the grass is four to six inches high before cutting any, and don't cut more than the top couple of inches off. If you cut it too short (I think you said you cut it to an inch high, and that is too short), it won't grow back.

If I have grown it in small containers, like a cottage cheese carton, I just put the container in with the pigs and let them eat. I don't usually do that with the larger containers until the grass is on its last legs, because they get in the boxes and mash the grass down.

What kind of wheat are you buying? I get hard red winter wheat seeds at the health food store.

Did you try growing the wheatgrass seeds in a clear and cut plastic water bottle? Like, the ones from Poland Springs I guess is just one example. You can also replace the potting soil with cotton balls. That has seemed to work fairly well for me in the past; I think the cotton retains the moisture pretty well so you don't really overwater or underwater. Just water enough to soak the cotton ball. But make sure that you spread the cotton ball out before putting the seeds in
