Is it possible to overfeed guinea pigs fresh veggies? My kids scream every time they see me go into the kitchen, so I give them a snack to keep their wheeks down (I live in a thin walled apt). Some days it seems like I give them two handfuls of spinach, 1/2 a cucumber or more, and some red pepper pieces between my two 6 month old pigs. |

If you feed the right types of veggies, you can't really over feed them. But if you feed not so great veggies, you can over do it and you could possibly end up with pigs with problems later on down the line. Spinach is very high in Vitamin A and through the roof in oxalic acid which if fed in large quantities too often it can liver/kidney problems or oxalate stones. Cucumber is best fed every 2-3 days in small quantities. Red pepper is fine to feed but due to high sugar levels, once or twice a week and the rest of the week you can feed green or yellow. Are these the only veggies you are giving? |

My boys love to eat too. I would highly suggest you keep cilantro, romaine and green leaf lettuce on hand and prewashed then you can just grab it when you need it. I also keep a veggie scraps bin in my fridge, then any time I chop up veggies for the people in the house that are cavy friendly, some go in there along with pre cut peppers and such. When everything's handy it's easy to give them the right things. |

Ly&Pigs- So far I have given them red peppers, spinach, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, and thinly sliced celery. I tried to give them a small piece of orange as a treat, but they were not interested in it. Tomorrow will only be the second week I've had them, but they have been getting spinach and cucumbers daily. I don't want to be doing anything harmful to them! What are good veggies they can eat everyday? |

Daily staples include a variety of lettuces (no iceburg) Bell pepper (mainly green or yellow as the more colorful, the more sugars) Cilantro Zucchini I'd ditch the spinach and go with kale a couple times per week. Kale is great for C content. Look at the Nutrition charts (sticky thread at top of this forum section) for veggies that can be fed and how often. The sample menus sticky thread is also a good resource. |

I found the chart and thank you for the info. It's easy to go wrong with their diets, so I'm glad I asked my question or I could have ended up feeding them the wrong veggies for who knows how long. I guess I will finish the bag of spinach myself and head to the store to buy them new veggies. |
