The other day a box elder bug (looks like this: Royal Alberta Museum: Invertebrate Zoology - Bug Facts - Box Elder Bug) flew into my guinea pig's cage and he ate it! My boyfriend thought that this was funny so he captured another one and held it in front of Craig and he ate it more excitedly than the first time. It looks like he legitimately likes these little bugs and finds them tasty. I've never heard of a guinea pig liking to eat bugs (isn't this a reptile thing, not a guinea pig thing?!) but is there any health danger to him doing it that I should be worried about? These bugs are all over outside so if I ever let him out in the yard to play he'll surely eat more... |

Piggies are strict vegetarians and you should not let your boyfriend feed your cavy bugs! Yes there are potential health compications, their digestive systems are not made to break down animal protiens. |

There is also the issue of parasites, as some insects serve as the intermediate host for such ghoulies. |
