Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Hello, I have two boars that I just recently got last week and I'm not sure what age they are as I haven't been able to buy a kitchen scale just yet but I had been feeding them pellets from Wal-Mart and now am not so sure that this was the best idea. I'm trying to figure out what brand that's in my area would be best because I have not been able to find Oxbow or Kleenmama's around here (I would have to order them online). Some of the options I have are: Kaytee's Timothy Complete Zupreem Nature's Promise Gerty Guinea Pig Food Nutriphase Guinea Pig Food Would any of these 4 options be fine? Or should I just start ordering their food online...? I already know not to get any mixes with seeds and weird dried stuff inside thanks to reading around here and if I put an option on there that included any of that I apologize but was writing down things as I saw them. Thanks! |

None of those are a good option. I suggest just ordering online, Kleenmama's is the best and that's what I feed. The piggies love it. Buying it in bulk saves money as well. What kind of hay are you feeding? |

I'm feeding them Timothy hay although sometimes I put a little Alfalfa in there because I'm not sure of their age. They're not small but they're not big either. |

Hay as in what brand of Hay. If your not sure about their age, just stick with the Timothy. |

Sorry, I misunderstood. It is Kaytee Timothy Hay. |

Kleenmama's pellets have to be ordered online as they are not sold in stores. The pellets you listed are all very low quality garbage. Oxbow pellets can be found in PetNotSoSmart although it would be better to order them than to support the pet store. |

I tried to do a google search and cannot find where to order Kleenmama. Can someone refer me to a shop. I will say i hate hate hate kaytee and nutriphase. None of my critters get that food. |

Also, how long do you think a 10lb. of KM's pellets would last for two boars? I'm willing to pay the $21 dollars for it to get shipped to my apartment and everything but just wanted to know approx. how much a month or whatever I would be paying that. |

You could have done a forum search for the answer as the link is posted many times. It's Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home and it's the only place online where it can be ordered. |

Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home They only need 1/8 - 1/4 cup of pellets per day. I've never kept track of how long a bag lasts, but it seems to me that a 10lb bag would last me about 1½ - 2 months I guess and I have 4 pigs. (I also now buy 25lbs and separate it into 5lb bags and freeze them) |

Oh okay, then yeah I think the 10lb bag should be fine for them. 20$ every other month is no big deal, especially if it means they will be getting the nutrients they need. Thank you! |

You should order some of her hay while you're at it, too. It's amazing! The brand of hay isn't as much of an issue as the pellet brand, but the quality difference is very noticeable. |

Martin's, Sweet Meadow, and Mazuri (only one type, I think it's 5665 or something) are also alright, but you should really get Oxbow or Kleenmama's. I didn't think there was Oxbow in my area either, but I found it at my pet specialty shop. |

Yeah I found the Oxbow brand online in a PetSmart catalog but I really liked how Kleenmama's had all the information online and has been recommended by many. I will soon be taking steps to acquire that one! |

I like Oxbow best, their website has a spot where you can find local sellers. Oxbow Animal Health | Find Oxbow Products They also have recommended online retailers if there isn't a shop near you. EDIT - didn't realize question had already been resolved. Disregard! Last edited by Tessa Bea; 10-24-09 at 07:21 pm. Reason: oops |

KM has superior pellets over Oxbow simply because she formulated them herself for our furry friends nutritional needs because there are so many bad brands out there. Her ingredients list is about 1/2 of what Oxbows is. She only included the most necessary ingredients. Her hay is exceptional. I order the bluegrass for my girls mostly but every once in a while I will get 1/2 bluegrass 1/2 3rd cut timothy. |

Yeah I noticed that, her list was WAY shorter than many others I have been looking at and that was comforting. I just bought a big bag of hay but maybe when that one's done I will give her's a try. =] |
