Alfalfa for Adults

I have alfalfa hay for our horses and young rabbit. I was wondering if it could be used for an adult guinea pig too. I give them timothy and don't really plan on giving them all alfalfa, but I've heard that alfalfa isn't good for adults. Yet everytime I'm told this, no one can tell me why. I was just wondering if anyone on this site knows the specifics about the harm it can do to them. Thank you!

Re: Alfalfa for Adults

It very high in calcium. A little bit for an occational treat is okay but it definitely can not replace Timothy hay for your cavies (or your Rabbit, it needs Timothy Hay and alfalfa while young similarly)

Re: Alfalfa for Adults

Like JD said, it's high in calcium. Too much calcium can lead to the formation of bladder sludge and or kidney/bladder stones. Calcium can also bind with oxalic acid to form oxalate stones. Stones are very serious in pigs and most often require surgery to remove. This is the reason we recommend switching to timothy based pellets at about 6 months of age and why certain veggies can only be fed so often and why alfalfa hay isn't good for older pigs.
