dried friut?

Can guinea pigs eat dried fruit at all? Or just stick with fresh fruit?

Re: dried friut?

It's better to stick with fresh as dried fruits are laden with sugars.

A couple of raisins every once in a great while or a piece of dried fig rarely can be given. Anything else should be avoided entirely.

Re: dried friut?

If you have a home dehydrator can you dry the fruit without the sugar? The only way I have seen fruit dehydrated on a dehydrator at home was as a "fruit roll-up" sort of thing. But I am wondering if you can just stick a piece of fruit on there and dry it out. Or does that take some of the nutrition out the way baking does? I am always trying to think of new things to surprise the guys with.

Re: dried friut?

When fruits are dried, all the water is taken out and it makes the natural sugars more concentrate in the fruit. Sugars in the diet should be kept at a minimum to prevent things like diabetes and other health problems.

You're brilliant! I understand now...makes perfect sense.

You know, it's funny...my hubby and I go to the veggie market. We'll pick something up and say, "What does Ly say about this?" Or at home when he is grabbing an apple to cut up when we already gave some two days ago, I'll scold him, "Ly said fruit only once or twice a week!"

You are the diet queen!

My daughter always asks "What does the internet say we can feed the piggies today?"
