My friend asked me if he can use biotin supplement for his piggies to help smoothened the piggies hair. I recognize that biotin used as one of the pellets ingredients. So are we allowed to give biotin to our pigs? If yes, how much should we fed it to them? And if it's not please give the reason. Thanks |

I would not give it. Pellets and vegetables contain enough biotin to meet a guinea pig's needs. More won't accomplish anything; it will just be excreted. Does your friend's pig has a fur problem? |

I don't know, he just asked me that. He thinks piggies fur are very rough, and he wants to make it smoother. He gave biotin to his rabbit and its really help to make the fur looks smooth, healthy, and shiny. And asked if the thing works too on piggies. By the way, there's only low quality pellets in our place that we use. We don't have guinea pig pellets, we only have rabbit pellets and rodents pellet (i use this one because its look safer than using rabbit pellets). |

Does your friend realize that different breeds of guinea pigs have different types of hair? Some are naturally rough. Biotin is unlikely to hurt his pig, but I really don't think it is necessary if he is providing pellets and veggies. |

I don't know he realize it or not, he's a newbie in piggies world though. And I think when he told me about the piggies fur, it's mostly like american, peruvian, abyssinian or abyruvian fur because only those breed that can be found in here. By the way, would you please tell me the difference of piggies fur, i mean by their breed? It really excite me to know more about piggies |

You can do a google search (or any search engine) for cavy breeds to learn more about the types of breeds. |

I know the breeds, but what i mean in here is I don't know is there any differences about maybe the pigments, or textures or anything (anything which is smaller than a strand of fur). If there's any differences between them, I think maybe different care and nutritions are needed for their fur. |

Dietary needs are the same for any pig regardless of the texture of their fur or even if they have no fur such as in skinnies and baldwins. I can't explain texture differences very well as that's not an area I'm well versed in. I know that there are smooth coated pigs and then there are pigs that are more rough coated. |
