Hello, I am in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia. Am I right to assume you can't get Timothy hay in Australia? No-one seems to know what I'm talking about when I ask if they have it. So is the next best thing to get grass hay? I can't seem to get that either! The produce stores here have oaten hay & barley hay, but are these grain hays only suitable to feed every few days or shouldn't they have grain hays at all? They also have oaten chaff and barley chaff, should I buy the HAY or the CHAFF? Or none & keep looking for grass hay? Are there any other Australian members who can help me with my search for grass hay? What is meadow hay & pasture hay? Are these just like grass hay, are they okay to feed, are they just alternative names for grass hay, or something entirely different? I really hope you can help! Thanks. |

You want grass hay, no chaff. There are many types of grass hays. Timothy is one type, others include brome, bermuda, bluegrass, orchard, meadow, etc. Are there any horse stables or farms near you? If so, ring them up and see what they use. Oat hay (grain hay) is better than no hay if that is all you can get but check out different places and see if you can find grass hay. |

Hello & thankyou for the advice so far. Just so that I know... why is hay better than chaff? And is oaten hay better to get than barley hay for some reason? Ultimately, I still hope to be able to locate some grass hay in my area. |

Chaff is this: Chaff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which is not grass or hay. Cavies need long strands of grass hay to help wear down the molars and to aid in digestion. Cavies make a special poo called a ceceal poo which they eat and it contains particles of undigested hay and other plant materials that they need. Oat and Barley are grain hays and are not grass hays. I don't know much about barley hay but I know some people who feed oat hay as a treat. Cavies have a harder time digesting grains vs. grass. If you can locate either meadow hay or pasture hay, either would be good to use. |

I have first cut, very fragrant organic timothy hay grown in Central NJ on a horse farm. I'll be happy to send you some, 5 pounds for $8, 10 pounds for $14. Or if you'd like some on a regular basis, (may be second cut next time) we could work something out and I'll ship it however you prefer, at cost of course. Let me know. Otherwise, best of luck in finding some there. |
