Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I saw a new 'Spring Mix' bag of lettuce in the market that looked really good, but it had some stuff in it that I never heard of and I can't find on the charts. Usually I go by the rule, if it's not on the charts, they don't get it...but this stuff looked so good and fresh and crisp, and I know lettuces can be known by different names in different parts of the country, so I'm asking if anybody knows anything for the piggies sake! It looks so good! It was all medium or dark green or dark red...NO ICEBURG COLOR! (Besides, I'm not exactly a gourmet chef, and just because I never heard of it, doesn't mean much!!!!) Here are the lettuces in it that I never heard of: Tango Green & Red Oak Lettuce Lolla Rosa Mizuna Tatsoi Frisee Anybody know if any of that stuff is unsafe for our guys/gals? THANKS! |

Those all seem fine but just be aware that the salad mixes (I've had the spring mix before too) tend to have moisture inside the bag/box which leads to them wilting pretty quickly. If you have a salad spinner, I would use that with the spring mix to dry it out. It can get pretty gross/slimy with all that moisture, pretty quickly |

All are assorted types of lettuce of the loose leaf kind. Very home grower friendly, harvest outer leaves and it keeps on growing, I've grown several. I like to keep a folded piece of paper toweling in a new bag of greens, it seems to help absorb extra moisture and extend the life of my green bits. I'll use the spinner for salad right before I serve but it tends to bruise the leaves so I don't wash until right before I serve. Mustard, kale, turnip and beet greens, chard, collard and the like get a rinse if it looks like it needs it, the top bits wrapped in toweling in turban fashion, tucked in a bag and away to the ice box. *I like greens and even feed them to the piggies* |

I don't have a salad spinner, but I always wash and dry the greens from the bag before I use them. I rinse them and lay them out on a paper towel to dry, then blot them with another paper towel. Anything that looks even the least little bit 'funny' or soggy or 'not fresh and crisp' goes right in the trash. Nothing but the best for My Guy! azalea, thanks for the tip about the paper towel in the bag! I'm trying it with my next fresh bag! |

My pigs LOVE spring mix. They particularly love the baby frise. They have this for breakfast every day - it is their routine. It is all safe for them and if they are anything like my piggies they will scarf it down in no time. |
