Question Is there something wrong with carrots?

The charts say 1 small/day is OK, but I've noticed that in a lot of posts, for different reasons, 'NO CARROTS' is specifically mentioned. Since after 5 years, my piggie has just started loving them, it's important for me to know...is there something wrong about them that I'm missing? Do I need to be cautious about them for some reason?

Re: Is there something wrong with carrots?

One baby carrot per pig per day is fine for pigs that are a good weight and eat a variety of veggies.

Carrots are high in vitamin A and sugar, don't provide a whole lot of other nutrients, and are therefore more of a treat. So if you have a pig who is overweight or who doesn't eat other veggies, they're best to avoid. Otherwise they make a good treat.

They also contain a lot of oxalic acid and for that reason, they shouldn't be fed to pigs that have sludge or stones.

Sometimes I tell people not to feed carrots for different reasons. Sometimes it's a new pig who won't eat veggies, I tell them not to give carrots but rather give other veggies instead. Sometimes it's for a sludge/stone pig. It basically depends on the pigs situation as to why they are told no carrots.

Re: Is there something wrong with carrots?

Even if your pig is healthy and eating a variety of veggies, I'd still only feed carrots as a small treat no more than twice a week, just to be on the safe side. There are lots of other treats you can offer that are healthier anyway.

Re: Is there something wrong with carrots?

My pigs don't eat carrots. They would just give a sniff and walk away. They do how ever love the long bushy green leaves on top of the carrots. Is it ok to feed them that every day ?

Re: Is there something wrong with carrots?

Not really, they're high in calcium and Vitamin A. I'd feed maybe twice a week at most.
