Yeah I'd say you just want to make sure the string parts aren't to long.
Will definitely check around here then. The only health store I can think of though is a GNC, but I don't know if they would sell something like that.

Haha, well I will have to see if I have any sort of green thumb then.

Can the wheat grass be substituted as a leafy green on some days? Or is it just a sort of treat on the side?

Re: Just romaine lettuce ok?

Wow you guys are paying too much. I shop at the asian grocery stores and korean markets.

Cilantro .39/bunch (3 feedings for 2 per bunch)
Romian Lettus .88/head (usually I make a salad for me and get 3-4 servings for the pigs)
Green Leaf .59/head (if only for the pigs i get at least 4 servings out of one)
Red Leaf .69/head (same as the green)
Kale .79/bunch (I only give it to them once a week now so we cook with the rest but it could easily be 4 servings)

then I buy peppers there for between 1.29 and .99/pound. Often I walk out with like 5 or 6 peppers for 2.50.
Zucchini .99/each
Cucumber .89/each
Peas .89/bag
Baby carrots (I buy them for my kiddo's lunches and snag a few for snacks now and then)

My piggy grocery list = $10/week. Max.

Hm. I will have to check the Asian markets here again. Whenever I go, lettuce was scare. But I did buy cilantro from a market today for .69/bunch. It lasts about a week. They normally don't have the other stuff you listed. Just other veggies I've never seen before and/or can't read the sign anyway.

You can give them the cilantro as the green of the meal instead of romain so even if you switch back and forth between the two that's a start.

Re: Just romaine lettuce ok?

I'm in Northern Ontario, fresh veggies are pretty expensive, we have a few farms but 95% of fresh stuff is trucked in.

My Cilantro is 1.99 a bunch.

Since you're the one asking for information, it would seem like it would make a lot better sense for you to give us some indication of where in the world YOU are.

My little rinky-dink grocery store in upstate NY carries dandelion greens. Any of the bagged lettuce is a heck of a lot more expensive than nearly any of the lettuce by the head.

What are you giving them other than romaine? It makes a lot of difference to what the answer to your questions should be.

I'm in Indiana. We have a "variety" I suppose but a lot of stuff is going out of season (corn husks, for one).

I have never seen dandelion greens in a grocery store before. Now I'm thinking of the weed and have a feeling I'm thinking of the wrong thing? Haha.

Other than romaine, they get: cilantro, zucchini, carrots, celery, green pepper, and green beans. I portion everything out and only certain stuff on certain days, according to Ly's chart. I also designate two days as "Fruit Days" where I give them a bit of whatever fruit I bought that week. That way they get a sort of "treat" that isn't bad for them. Last week was peach - that's definitely a new favorite. I managed to get a good deal on strawberries for this week.

I get "Catgrass oats" from Canadian Tire in the pet section in kits or in the garden seed displays in packets. Try looking in the pet sections for cat grass, to grow for your guinea pigs. McKenzie Seeds :: Product Listing

Nope! It's the exact same thing. When they're grown commercially they're huge. Usually in with things like turnip or collard greens.

I'm with you on missing corn husks! We're in corn country too and that was a huge favorite for my guys, and better yet, free. I can't get my boars to try any fruits other than apple or banana - they seem to be little health nuts!

We still have a few corn husks here, but they don't look nearly as good as they did during the summer. My parents have a garden back home so I would also get free husks and zucchini from them. Their stuff grew WAY more than whatever I could buy at the store. I'm going to miss that over the summer.

Re: Just romaine lettuce ok?

As far as how long 1 head of lettuce will last three pigs, it's hard to answer because it will depend on the size of the head and how much you feed each pig per day, so there is no definite answer.

I normally give my 2 girls, 2 large leaves or 3-4 smaller leaves of lettuce per feeding.

Ly, is the 2 large leaves per pig or for both? I've been giving mine 2 large leaves (plus cilantro, bell peppers and rotating veggie) each per feeding and wonder if I am overfeeding them.

Re: Just romaine lettuce ok?

you can try growing some herbs and even lettuces in pots if you lack gardening space, you be surprise how easy it is to grow them. I was and I guess, still am a gardening klutz but that has not stop me from growing them. all you need are some good deep pots. you need minimum height of about 20 cm for healthy root growth, some good potting mix and away we go. Just water everyday and watch your efforts being enjoyed by the piggies.

After a few months, I now have 4 healthy bush (all in pots) of parsley (mixed), assorted lettuces: romaine-red and green, butterhead, mizuna, tatsoi and frilly endive.
Also got myself a few more pots to grow tomatoes, capsicum and peas.

That is a wonderful idea. I just wish I had the room for so many pots to do that. We're in a 1 bedroom apartment, so space is lacking at the moment. I have some room just in front of our window in the living room that I am hoping to use to grow grass for them.

Ly - Thank you for that info! I think I may be overfeeding my guys a bit, so I will stick to the rule of 2 big/3-4 small leaves of lettuce.

Do you have a Sprouts grocery store near? I live near Dallas and they are popping up a lot around here. Fantastic prices for natural foods...I paid $.50 recently for a head of red leaf lettuce there.

Re: Just romaine lettuce ok?

Earlier, the OP mentioned buying pre-packaged lettuce. I heard that baby carrots, for example, are washed in some sort of a chemical solution. Is the same true for pre-cut, pre-washed lettuce, or is it just washed with water?

Nope, no Sprouts here. Must be a Southern thing, like the Pigley-Wigley (or however it is spelled).

couchon - I buy the baby carrots that are pre-cut/packaged. Are they a bad thing to feed to guinea pigs?
