I found oxbow oat hay today and was wondering if it's any good. It smelt so good. I did an online search and found the nutrition value. Ingredients 100% Oat Hay. Preservative and Additive Free. Loose Hay contains stems, leaves, and limited seed heads. Guaranteed Analysis

It's a treat hay. I give my pigs a handful a couple of times a week when we have it and they love it. |

It can be given every day, you'd probably want to give it in small amounts and always make sure timothy or orchard or another grass hay is always available. ETA, And I say it can be given every day because my vet has recommended feeding it to my pigs as part of an oat/orchard grass mix to lower overall calcium. So it's probably not ideal to give it free feed to your pigs, but a small amount every day should be fine. |

It can be fed in very small amounts daily but in my opinion, it's better fed only a couple times per week as it's a grain hay and not a grass hay. Cavies have a harder time digesting grains. In Paula's cases she has pigs who have issues with stones so for a stones pig it may better help reduce calcium intake. |

Actually it's been recommended to feed to all pigs, not only those with a history of stones or sludge and we've been doing it for quite a while now with no issues, so I'm fairly confident if you wanted to feed it in very small amounts as a daily treat, it would be fine, but a weekly or twice weekly treat would be fine too. |

Thanks ladies. I picked it up about an hour ago. I have the timothy herbage hay also. I gave my girls a small handfull of the oxbow oat hay and they gobbled it up in minutes. I was surprised to see very little oats/grains. Mostly grass. I'll limited the amount i give. Thanks for the info. One more thing to add. My girls will be 13 weeks on friday,so a hand full 4 times a week ok ? Last edited by princesspoppy; 09-30-09 at 04:08 pm. Reason: more info |

Poppy what you could do is one day give some of the hay with herbage in it (as it's not good for daily feeding either due to the herbs) and the next give the oat hay and just switch back and forth in addition to their regular hay. |

I just meant that it's a "treat" and not a replacement for grass hay. I don't personally feed it every day because I have to order it online and the small bags get pricey. |
