Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0
On our local craigslist someone was giving away "rice straw". My husband asked me if the piggies could have something like that. I didn't know what to tell him as I've never heard of it. I wouldn't think so, but I wanted to know what anybody knows about it. I have no plans on getting it, I just was curious about it. Thanks. |

I didn't know, either. Google is a wonderful resource. Summarized here: http://ucanr.org/freepubs/docs/8079.pdf It's an alternative feed for cattle. It has a low digestability and crude protein (low). I couldn't find anything about feeding it to guinea-pigs. |

Rice straw is straw of paddy. People in tropic countries usually gives them as hay. It's very common in my country. |

Any type of straw would not be suitable to feed guinea pigs. Straw and hay are two different things. Straw is the dried shaft of plants, hay is dried grass. Straw mainly comes from cereal grain plants. |
